What's Next...Postsecondary Training Preparation for Students with Visual Impairments

Dr. Karen Wolffe

Attendees will:

  • Learn the critical skills that young adults with visual impairments will need to acquire before graduation from high school to be successful in postsecondary training programs such as:
    • Self-advocacy techniques, including an understanding of legislated rights and responsibilities.
    • Study skills, including note-taking, effective listening, time management, material & tool organization, research techniques, etc.
    • Positive and assertive communication skills and an understanding of the levels of relationships one develops in a postsecondary training environment.
    • Problem solving strategies and resources to cope with housing, transportation, mobility, financial assistance, independent living, and related responsibilities.
    • Research approaches to investigate training programs and determine if they will lead to outcomes of choice.
  • Learn the resources available to youths exiting the public school system or home schooling and moving into postsecondary training environments.

  • Learn how to reach out to adults with visual impairments to enlist their help with youngsters who are unsure what they want to do beyond high school and how to seek out training that matches their career goals.

Session 2: Released June 16, 2010

Technology and Visual Impairment in Higher Education

Mr. Ike Presley

Attendees will learn about:

  • Current trends in technology—what's new and what works.
  • Technology commonly found in high school
  • Technology commonly found in postsecondary institutions
  • Technological solutions to problems found in lectures, labs, etc
  • Tips for preparing for the transition into postsecondary institutions
