Over the past five years, the American Foundation for the Blind has been working to provide relevant information about the accessibility of cell phones for people with vision loss, and to track how well manufacturers and service providers are complying with Section 255. Although nobody could argue that progress hasn't been made, the American Foundation for the Blind is not satisfied with the current state of cell phone accessibility. There are too few phones available with significant speech output functionality, and display screens are not designed to be viewable by most people with low vision. Additionally, there have been no serious efforts by the manufacturers to make cell phone buttons easier to identify by touch or easier to see if you have low vision. The following links provide an overview of cell phone accessibility for people who are blind or visually impaired.
