Everyday Skills

You don't lose your knowledge and skills when you develop a vision problem, but you may have to learn new techniques for carrying out everyday activities. Your needs will depend on your particular vision problem and the tasks that are most important to you.

  • For some people the challenge may be mealtime—organizing the dining table so that they can avoid spills and enjoy relaxed meals with family or friends.

  • For others, it may be a dollars-and-cents issue—finding a reliable way of recognizing the different denominations of coins and bills.

  • Still others may be concerned about basic housekeeping—maintaining a neat, clean living space.

In this section you'll find suggestions for developing new approaches to familiar tasks. None of these guidelines involve any high-tech adaptations. They're simple, easy to accomplish, and will help you to continue managing your home and living independently.
