Fall 2005When I look back over my life growing up and into adulthood, there are several people that immediately come to mind who I believe were extraordinary. To name a few: my family, teachers, several musicians, and a host of others that in one way or another touched me, and made a difference in my life. To me, all of these people were extraordinary but may not have been considered so by society. Helen Keller, on the other hand, is one of those people whom everyone recognizes as extraordinary, and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to lead the organization to which she devoted so much of her life and energy to. Ms. Keller believed that each person had the ability to make a difference in the lives of those around them. She trusted in the power that comes from believing in oneself and she devoted much of her time to breaking down the taboos that plagued her. Helen was not only blind and deaf, but was a strong independent woman in an era where women did not have the same rights they have now. Today, her life's journey continues to be an inspiration to me, and I hope to all of you as well. As you will read in the articles attached, Helen Keller's legacy lives on in AFB not only in the fact that the Helen Keller Archives are housed in our New York office and can be accessed through our web site, www.afb.org, but also in our commitment to ensure that everyone living with vision loss has the same opportunity that their fully sighted peers have. I hope that her story inspires you as much as it does all of us at AFB every day. Sincerely,
Fall 2005 |
