Spring 2006Dear Friends, I often think of Anne Sullivan Macy as "the woman behind the woman." Although Helen Keller was an inspiration to many, Anne was her inspiration and, in many instances, her strength. Upon her death, Anne was cremated and her ashes were laid to rest in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. She was the first woman to be given this honor on her own merits. The momentous nature and irony of this would not have been lost on her. The daughter of poor Irish immigrants, whose life involved much hardship and who fought to be heard and to have others listen to her as an advocate for the blind, she was ultimately honored in a celebrated way. Although Anne saw her role as secondary to Helen's and remained skeptical about her own legacy, she became very much a part of American popular culture. It is Anne Sullivan Macy and not Helen Keller who was the primary focus of The Miracle Worker, the most well-known adaptation of the story of Helen's young life. If Anne Sullivan Macy, nearly a century ago, was able to find and release the powers within her young student, there should be no limit to what we can do in our own time to expand possibilities for people with vision loss. I hope you take the time to read her story. Sincerely, Carl R. Augusto
