Laura Bush Letter

Dear Friends,

I am delighted to send greetings as you kick off the American Foundation for the Blind's National Campaign for Literacy, Textbooks, Transcribers and Technology.

President Bush and I admire and are grateful to the American Foundation for the Blind, Verizon Communications and all organizations and individuals who help improve literacy for our nation's blind and low-vision schoolchildren.

The inauguration of this initiative marks the beginning of a new career in America - Braille Textbook Transcriber - that will ensure that vision challenges will not deter our young students from having the materials they need to succeed with their education.

We especially admire Erik Weihenmayer for his courageous and extraordinary achievements in life and on behalf of literacy. The President had the pleasure of speaking with Erik when he was reaching for the sky on Mt. Everest and again after this historic climb. Erik's accomplishments are testament to the National Campaign's slogan that "Literacy lets you reach the summit of your dreams."<

May you enjoy your evening, and may your rewarding work continue to be an inspiration to others.

With best wishes,

Laura Bush
