Interested in Becoming a Braille Transcriber?Literacy Lets You Reach the Summit of Your Dreams
Determined to enable equal education for blind and visually impaired schoolchildren, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) partnered with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) and Northwest Vista College in San Antonio, Texas, to develop a college-level curriculum to educate and train braille textbook transcribers, leading to college-level and national certifications. To achieve this goal, AFB found an established and committed corporate partner—Verizon Communications. Braille Textbook Transcriber CurriculumA series of nine core courses (see list below) were established through a rigorous process involving content and community college experts. The Braille Textbook Transcriber curriculum was piloted in 2003-2004 and has continued with 28 students completing the program to date. The core courses are well suited to an online application, which will significantly enhance access by a broader spectrum of students seeking the Braille Textbook Transcriber certificate. An online version of the courses was developed by AFB and Northwest Vista College, with leading online educational providers, and was deployed in August 2006. The introduction of the Braille Textbook Transcriber curriculum is an exciting opportunity for a college to offer new, challenging, and rewarding career choice to its students—a career that will forever change the quality of education for blind and visually impaired students.
