Carl R. Augusto Elected President North American/Caribbean Region of the World Blind Union
NEW YORK (April 21, 2008)—Carl R. Augusto, President & CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB), was elected President of the North American/Caribbean Region of World Blind Union (WBU) on April 17, 2008, at its Semi-Annual Meeting in Nassau, Bahamas. Augusto succeeds Jim Gibbons, President & CEO of the National Industries for the Blind, who has held the position since 2006.
"As President, I hope to continue to bring together the major organizations providing services and programs for people who are blind in order to promote the prevention and treatment of blindness and advance the well-being of the 180 million blind and visually impaired people worldwide," said Augusto. "I am honored and excited to have been elected into this role."
Augusto is a preeminent leader in the field of blindness and visual impairment and has worked in the field for his entire career. Prior to his current role at AFB, he served as executive director of the Cincinnati Association for the Blind, a multiservice private agency, held several staff and management positions with the National Accreditation Council for Agencies Serving the Blind and Visually Handicapped in New York City, and worked as a rehabilitation counselor. President & CEO of AFB since May 1991, Augusto has expanded AFB's scope to influence corporate America to make products and services accessible to blind and visually impaired people and has brought organizations of and for the blind together toward common objectives and greater collaboration.
The prominent WBU is the internationally recognized organization that represents over 160 million blind and partially sighted persons in 177 member countries and is the only organization entitled to speak on behalf of blind and partially sighted persons to global organizations such as the United Nations.
