About AFB's Blog

The American Foundation for the Blind is a national organization expanding possibilities for people with vision loss. AFB experts can be found on Capitol Hill ensuring children have the educational materials they need to learn; in board rooms working with technology companies to ensure that their products are fully accessible; and at conferences ensuring professionals who work with people with vision loss have access to the latest research and information. Through our online resources and information center we communicate directly with people experiencing vision loss, and their families, to give them the resources they need to maintain an independent lifestyle.

Carl R. Augusto has been the President & CEO of AFB since May 1991. He is a preeminent leader in the field of vision loss and disabilities. During his tenure, he has expanded AFB's scope to influence corporate America to make products and services accessible to people with vision loss and has refined our mission to ensure we are reaching people with all levels of vision loss.

Carl was born with a disease that caused him to lose his vision. As an adult he has dedicated his career to his passion: ensuring people with vision loss can live independently and without discrimination. Through this blog, Carl hopes to expand the public's understanding of what living with vision loss means and how AFB is working to expand possibilities for people with vision loss. Technology is increasingly becoming a tool to ensure independence—but only when it's accessible—so readers will find technology to be a major focus of this blog.

When he's not working or traveling, Carl can be found playing the guitar or watching a UConn Huskies game, so don't be surprised to occasionally see posts about music and basketball on this blog. Above all though, Carl will share his wisdom and insights on how the latest developments in technology are affecting how people with vision loss, live, work, read, and enjoy life.
