Meet Jimmy the Taxi Man: The Most Vision Loss-Friendly Cab on Earth

New York cabbies step aside! This taxi driver has set the bar very high...

Jimmy the taxi man and his cabOn a recent business trip to Kentucky, we met the greatest taxi driver. Jimmy the Taxi Man, or "Cab Dude" as he calls himself, came highly recommended by a friend. He was the epitome of southern charm, and a huge advocate for people with vision loss. To our suprise, he had braille on the doors of his cab and on his business cards, and was working to get all Louisville cabbies to do the same. He wants people with vision loss to have access to cab ID numbers in case they need to report a bad experience. His clients include a blind local radio personality and a blind couple he takes grocery shopping. The world would be a better place with more Cab Dudes. If you ever find yourself in charming Louisville, give Jimmy a ring. You won't be sorry.

I've known Jimmy for almost 11 years now and you will never find a more friendly person anywhere! Jimmy's passion to help anyone shows in his work and carries over to his personal life. The next time you're in Louisville please be sure to call him. His knowledge of Louisville and his charm will surely make your visit a pleasant one!

How nice that there are those people out there in the public and private sector who care and who want to do the right thing. Actually, I have used a local taxicab service for several years now. My experience with them has almost always been very positive, but there were times where I've run into drivers who don't offer any type of assistance whatsoever. Most of these drivers are not native to this country. I was in a job-skills program several years back that contracted with two cab companies to provide rides for all program participants. These cab companies were both excellent in terms of service. The drivers were all very friendly and courteous, and they were all too glad to offer whatever assistance they could. While the drivers all gave us their cell phone numbers if we asked, I don't ever recall seeing a Braille business card for one of these drivers though. To my knowledge these companies are no longer in business. The program I was in is no longer in existence either.

We have a "Cab Due" in Washington, DC, too, with braille business cards and a dedication to his loyal blind clientele. His name is Lou Thompson and he can be reached on his wireless phone at 301-980-7916.
