Macular Degeneration in the Spotlight

Posted by Carl Augusto on 10/29/2008 10:55:31 AM

Photo of Carl AugustoAFB has done a lot of work relating to age-related macular degeneration, especially through Senior Site, our web site geared toward aging adults with vision loss. Macular degeneration is one of the main causes of vision loss in the US for older Americans, and it's going to affect a lot more people as baby boomers age. But, even though diagnosis rates are expected to double by the year 2025, living an independent life with macular degeneration is entirely possible with just a few modifications and lifestyle changes—such as using accessible technology like Kathleen Gilmore.

To continue to raise awareness about the condition, the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB) recently released a special issue on macular degeneration. The issue contains information on new research and findings that will help professionals in the field better understand how seniors are affected by this condition and prepare them to help their patients cope with living with macular degeneration. Hopefully the issue will encourage conversation among professionals and more research on new technology and innovative ways to help people with macular degeneration continue to live an independent life with vision loss.

Dear Mr. Augusto,
Just thought I would let you know about my recently opened online store featuring low vision friendly greeting cards. In brief, my store came about as a result of my grandmothers visual difficulties with reading the cards she recieved and my attempts to make her ones she could see. I developed a 14 point criteria with which I use to select cards suitable for people living with low vision. If you check out my website www.icanseegreetings.com you'll get the rest of the story and see the selection of cards available.
Sincerely,
Melissa Brashear
