News About the New iPhone 3G S

Posted by Darren Burton on 6/11/2009 11:41:46 AM

Photo of Darren BurtonThis week, Apple, Inc. announced accessibility enhancements for the iPhone. According to Apple, the "iPhone 3G S provides new accessibility features including VoiceOver, a screen reader that speaks what appears on the iPhone 3G S display, enabling visually impaired users to make calls, read email, browse web pages, play music and run applications. The new universal Zoom function magnifies the entire screen, and the White on Black feature reverses the colors on screen to provide higher contrast for people with low vision. iPhone 3G S also supports Mono Audio which combines left and right audio channels so that they can be heard in both earbuds for those with hearing loss in one ear."

We will be reviewing the features and we'll report what we find out here and in AccessWorld®.

I'm glad everyone is excited about the phone! Jim, AT&T is the carrier for the iPhone.

I went to Apple's site and didn't see which carriers we can use IPhone with. Do you know?

This phone sounds very cool indeed! On a related note, the National Federation of the Blind has published a very negative "review" of VoiceOver and its use on the Mac. The article is in the June, 2009 issue of "The Braille Monitor." In addition, there are two podcast episodes which may be of interest to readers of this blog. They're both now on http://www.serotalk.com . The most recent of these was done by Mike Arrigo, and the one before that was done by Holly Anderson and Darcy Burnard of "The Screenless Switchers" podcast.

There has been so much written about the new accessibility features built in to the latest version of the iPhone software. I am really looking forward to reading review review in the next edition of AccessWorld extra. Perhaps you can give us some bonus material on the AFB blog next week?

Thanks guys!
