Mary Kingsley did what proper young ladies in 1893 did not usually do—she traveled alone from England to West Africa, then a mysterious place that most people from England knew little about. This book describes her life, from an unhappy childhood to the fulfillment of her dreams as she became an African explorer at the age of 30.
Helen Keller visited parts of Africa in her lifetime, too, although not the same part of the continent that Mary Kingsley explored—and, of course, much later. Helen Keller visited Southern Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe) and South Africa in 1951. She also visited Egypt, a country in North Africa, in 1952.
