Hana was a Jewish child living with her parents and older brother George in Nove Mesto, Czechoslovakia as World War II was occurring. Over time her childhood changed as more and more restrictions were placed on Jews. Hana watched as first her mother and then her father were taken away by the Nazis. Eventually she and her brother, George, were sent to a ghetto to live for 2 years. Hana was then sent to a concentration camp. Hana's story is told in alternating chapters with the story of Fumiko Ishioka, who works at the Tokyo Holocaust Center. As part of an exhibit to teach children about the Holocaust, Fumiko obtains Hana's suitcase. Her research to learn about Hana's fate is intertwined with the story of Hana's short life.
