Louis Braille is a 3 year old who injures his eye while playing with a tool in his father's workshop. Louis has to relearn how to feed himself and walk safely. When he is 10 he goes to a school for blind children in Paris. There Louis meets Charles Barbier, a captain the French Army. Barbier shows Louis and his classmates a code he has invented that lets soldiers share messages in the dark. Louis takes Barbier's code and changes it, so that a person who is blind can use it to read and write.
