Braille Literacy Instructor

The primary purpose of this position is to develop and deliver comprehensive Braille training to Inland Northwest Lighthouse employees and manage Braille materials and the reading practice groups.

Schedule and conduct preliminary assessment / evaluations to determine the participant's needs and the appropriate course of training
Coordinate with Seattle Braille program to share, develop and utilize course curricula and materials
Schedule and teach classes covering uncontracted, contracted, and computer braille as needed to adult learners, using tools such as Perkins brailler, slate & stylus, reading materials, and braille display
Support and coordinate reading groups
Follow department procedure for maintaining complete and accurate files and notes on all participants.
Provide status reports using results of quizzes, tests, assessments and surveys


Effective teaching approach working with those who are blind or have low vision

Ability to research and create effective curricula
In-depth knowledge of Braille code
Ability to take initiative, function autonomously, and be dependable.
Knowledge and understanding of Unified English Braille (UEB)
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in rehabilitation teaching, education or equivalent experience and education; teaching credential preferred.
Minimum 3 years Braille teaching required
Mature judgment and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and among diverse groups.
Braille Literacy Usage Examination (BLUE) certification or ability to have this status within the first 90-days of employment required.
Ability to actively engage and teach the new Unified English Braille (UEB) code is required.
