Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

Helen Keller National Center Confident Living Program

Posted by: Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults

Dates: 5/21/2018 - 5/25/2018

Who: Helen Keller National Center Confident Living Program

What: Train-the-Trainer, Hands-on opportunity for ILOB Program Managers or their state designee from the Older Blind Program during a Confident Living Program

When: The 2018 Confident Living Programs are May 21-May 25 and Oct 22 –Oct 26.

Where: Helen Keller National Center, Sands Point, NY

Why: Due to the increasing number of seniors living longer lives and developing age related loss of vision and hearing, rehabilitation professionals are working with more and more seniors who have dual sensory loss. Often, there is a need for staff to learn effective communication techniques for working with their client or there is a need for staff to gain knowledge of best-practices, techniques, and technologies that assist seniors with living their lives independently. Through a partnership between HKNC and MSU OIB-TAC, four Program Managers per year can attend the Confident Living Program to learn and participant in this train-the-trainer opportunity. With the skills and knowledge gained, it our goal that you share this information with your OIB staff and providers through training and to your consumers through the development of Confident Living Programs in your state.

How: Program Managers participate through acting as a Support Service Provider (SSP) to a deaf-blind senior throughout the week. American Sign Language or Tactile signing skills are preferred for the May CLP. There are only two spots open for ILOB staff per program. That’s a total of 4 each year. If interested, please contact Mark Armstrong or Bill Tomlin. See contact information below.

NOTE: Thank you for all you do in your state! I look forward to the opportunity of working with you, your designee, and potential consumers in your state. Please call or send an email if you would like further information about this opportunity for you, your staff, and potential consumers for the program.
