AFB Tech forms the hub of AFB’s technology initiatives. AFB Tech evaluates assistive technology and provides objective reviews—published in AFB’s AccessWorld® magazine—so blind and low vision consumers can make informed purchasing decisions. AFB Tech also works with the most influential technology companies around the world, assisting them in designing mainstream products that can be used by everyone—sighted and visually impaired.

Services for Adults
- Information and Referral
- Maintains a toll-free information line (800-232-5463) and an e-mail response service (firstname.lastname@example.org). AFB’s graphically rich websites are designed to be fully accessible to blind and visually impaired users. The main AFB website (www.afb.org), offers comprehensive, timely, and authoritative information on every aspect of blindness and visual impairment including an up-to-date, searchable database of nationwide services, message boards, community events, and announcements. The site features an extensive, searchable database of high- and low-tech products and AccessWorld®, AFB’s free, online technology magazine. It also includes the largest collection of Helen Keller memorabilia on the Internet. The newest addition to AFB’s family of websites is VisionAware™, developed in collaboration with Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight, which incorporates AFB’s award-winning SeniorSite and is designed to provide adults of all ages a one-stop resource to cope with vision loss.
Services for Professionals
- Consultation/Technical Program Assistance
- Conducts evaluations of assistive technology for persons with visual impairments and mainstream devices such as cell phones and office equipment, publishes its evaluations in AccessWorld®, and works with manufacturers, software developers, website designers, and hardware manufacturers to help them better understand and address the needs of those who are blind or visually impaired.
