Brief Description

The mission of Affiliated Blind of Louisiana (ABL) is to teach individuals who are blind and deaf-blind the skills that lead to independence, employment, and community integration. ABL is also a consumer organization that promotes the general welfare of the visually impaired, blind and deaf-blind, educates the public about blindness, and informs consumers of services available to them.

Services Offered

Services for Adults

  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Offers assistive technology training.
  • Counseling
    • Offers counseling services to blind or visually impaired clients.
  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides training in skills of daily living, cooking, personal management, communications, braille. Operates Project Cope, a home/community based service for blind or visually impaired seniors over 55.
  • Employment/Job Training
    • Offers vocational training program, job skills, interview skills, transition.
  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Provides orientation and mobility training including training for individuals in wheelchairs.

Services for Children

  • Braille and Reading Instruction
    • Provides instruction in braille. As an alternative to those who have difficulty in feeling braille, 'Fishburn' is offered.
  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Provides training in the use of computers and adaptive equipment.
  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides training in home and personal management skills.
  • Employment/Job Training
    • Offers job readiness training, including completing employment applications, writing resumes, interviewing techniques, mode of presentation, organizing a job search, interpersonal work skills including accepting supervision and getting along with co-workers, and good work habits.
  • Summer/Day Camps and After-school Programs
    • Offers a university transition program, which facilitates the transition into college and improves the likelihood of success in college. Affiliated Blind of Louisiana and The University of Louisiana, Lafayette, offer an opportunity for blind, visually impaired, and low vision college-bound students to get their feet wet in college life and, at the same time, learn critical blindness related skills.
  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Orientation and mobility training will be provided to enable the client to travel safely and independently within their environment.
