Services Offered

Services for Children

  • Assessment
    • Conducts functional vision, orientation and mobility, assistive technology, OT, PT, speech and sensory intergration assessments. Provides functional vision evaluations, learning media assessments, speech/language evaluations, fine/gross motor evaluations, and cognitive evaluations.
  • Braille and Reading Instruction
    • Instruction in braille and the use of optical devices to promote literacy plus prebraille and a multisensory approach to early literacy are offered to students. Instruction on braille and other appropriate media are also offered periodically to parents.
  • Community Outreach Programs
    • Has speakers bureau and provides itinerant services.
  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Computer training done directly and through consultative AT services.
  • Counseling
    • Offers parent counseling and other social and health services on consultant or referral basis.
  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Children learn appropriate independent living skills including self-feeding, dressing and hygiene.
  • Early Intervention/Infant Services
    • Offers home-based infant/toddler program with periodic center visits for evaluation of child's progress by team of teachers and therapists.
  • Education Services
    • CCVI offers services for children from birth to school age through home-based and center-based programs. Itinerant and consulting services are also available. CCVI serves children within a 90-mile radius of Kansas City.

      Provides early childhood and kindergarten classes and itinerant services for all ages. Offers home-based program with periodic center visits for visually impaired 0-3 year olds with or without other impairments, classes for visually impaired 2-5 year olds, with or without other impairments, as well as sighted peer models, and consultant services to other programs and itinerant services to outlying school districts.
  • Health
    • Offers hearing and vision screening.
  • Information and Referral
    • Referrals to other services/professionals as needed.
  • Preschool Programs
    • CCVI offers specialized instruction and therapies to preschool- and kindergarten-age children who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple diabilites. The preschool/kindergarten program includes field trips and special events with a wide range of experiential learning opportunities.
  • Recreation Services
    • Offers summer school for children from ages 2 through kindergarten.
  • Summer/Day Camps and After-school Programs
    • CCVI offers an extended school year for preschool/kindergarten students.
  • Support for Parents
    • Parent education and support is offered in a number of ways including the CCVI Parent Group, which meets regularly, and a Parent Newsletter. The CCVI staff also offers special events and workshops for the parents.
  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Our O&M specialists offer training in independent travel techniques, including pre-cane devices and cane training.
