Services Offered

Services for Children

  • Assessment
    • The Smokey Powell Assistive Technology Center at GAB offers Assistive Technology Evaluations for Georgia students who are blind or visually impaired. The Smokey Powell Center will also make short-term equipment loans when available.

      Offers comprehensive psychoeducational evaluation for visually impaired students placed in state residential school for the blind or in local school system.
    • The Smokey Powell Assistive Technology Center at GAB offers Assistive Technology Evaluations for Georgia students who are blind or visually impaired. The Smokey Powell Center will also make short-term equipment loans when available.
  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • The Smokey Powell Assistive Technology Center at GAB offers professional training opportunities for teachers of visually impaired students througout Georgia. Students may attend training classes with their vision teacher, as may parents. Classes are related to assistive technology for visually impaired
  • Counseling
    • Offers social evaluation, psychological testing and evaluation, individual/group/family-parent counseling, placement in school. Provides consultation to other agencies. Refers to community services.
  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides training in personal management, handwriting, listening skills, typing, home management, remedial education, sensory training.
  • Early Intervention/Infant Services
    • The Georgia Pines Infant Network is housed at GAB. GA Pines serves children who are visually impaired, ages Birth through age 3. Mrs. Kit Meader is the contact person.
  • Education Services
    • Offers grades K-12 and programs for college preparatory, general academic, vocational/skill development. Offers summer school programs. Accepts visually impaired and visually impaired-multiply disabled.
  • Employment/Job Training
    • Provides pre-vocational and vocational evaluation, career counseling, occupational skill development, vocational placement. Refers for noncompetitive settings through rehabilitation services.
  • Health
    • Provides general medical services, occupational and physical therapy, speech therapy. Refers for other health services.
  • Low Vision Services
    • The Smokey Powell Assistive Technology Center at GAB offers clinical Low Vision Evaluations to Georgia Children who are visually impaired. The Center will also provide non-electronic optic devices at no charge to the student, parent, or school system.
  • Preschool Programs
    • Preschool programs available for children ages 3 and 4.
  • Summer/Day Camps and After-school Programs
    • Offers after-school programs, arts and crafts, bowling, swimming, track, wrestling, softball, indoor games, cheerleading, intramural sports, scouting. Our summer program focuses on the Expanded Core Curriculum, with an emphasis on Assistive Technology.
  • Support for Parents
    • Offers assistance as needed or requested. Provides information about technology for people who are visually impaired, special parent workshops, summer camps, and educational programs for parents of academy students and of students in public schools.
  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Provides orientation and mobility training.

Services for Professionals

  • Consultation/Technical Program Assistance
    • Provides ongoing consultation/technical assistance to local school systems.
  • Professional Training
    • Offers internship/fieldwork placement in orientation and mobility, rehabilitation counseling, social work, special education, vocational rehabilitation. Holds annual workshop for teachers of students who are visually impaired.
