Brief Description

KSB, a division of the Kentucky Department of Education, provides a variety of educational programs, specialized materials, and resources for Kentucky students who are blind and visually impaired. KSB has many options to meet the diverse needs of students who are blind and visually impaired through on-campus programs at KSB or indirectly through Outreach Services.

Services Offered

Services for Children

  • Assessment
    • Works with parents and school personnel to develop plans and conduct evaluations for students in accessing regular education materials in the core curriculum and in the expanded core (disability-specific) curriculum areas.

      Through KSB Outreach Services, consultants work with parents and school personnel to develop plans and conduct evaluations for students in accessing regular education materials in the core curriculum and in the expanded core (disability-specific) curriculum areas including:
      • Functional Vision and Learning Media including Braille skills
      • Orientation and Mobility
      • Assistive Technology
      • Independent Living Skills
      • Social, recreational, and leisure skills.
      These evaluations are typically conducted in the student’s local school, but some assessments are conducted on the campus of KSB in Louisville. Assistance with speech/language and psychological evaluations is also available. Written reports including recommendations are provided.
  • Braille and Reading Instruction
    • Provides instruction in braille.
  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides training in personal management, orientation and mobility, independent living, job skills, transition activities.
  • Early Intervention/Infant Services
    • Provides consultations and assessments and other forms of technical assistance to districts and families for children between the ages of three to five.
  • Education Services
    • Offers programs from K through 12. Serves students who are blind and visually impaired from local education agencies (LEAs) throughout the state. Provides on-site observation and consultation including recommendations for appropriate curricular materials and instructional methods, modifications, and adaptations at the request of the local school district and/or the parents.
  • Employment/Job Training
    • Offers a work-based learning program that provides students with an opportunity to learn skills in a variety of businesses within the community.
  • Low Vision Services
    • Referrals are accepted for comprehensive low vision evaluations provided by an optometrist specializing in low vision. Provides low vision evaluation and follow-up.
  • Recreation Services
    • Offers after-school activities. Provides leisure counseling and training in recreational skills.
  • Summer/Day Camps and After-school Programs
    • Summer Enrichment Programs provide students an opportunity to increase knowledge and experience in reading, math, art, technology, sports/recreation, and vocational training. For more information contact Nancy Nusz, Director of Special Education & Programs, (nancy.nusz@ksb.kyschools.us)
  • Support for Parents
    • KIDS team members promote and engage parents, caregivers and other family members as full partners in the education process for their children. Maintains a parent resource center.

      Resources, educational and support activities for families, including support groups and statwide family conference.
  • Support Groups

Services for Professionals

  • Consultation/Technical Program Assistance
    • Provides consultation, technical assistance, and educational assessments for local schools in Kentucky. KSB Outreach Services through the Kentucky Instructional and Diagnostic Services (KIDS) support proficient student performance by assisting local school districts, including KSB/D, in reducing barriers to learning associated with a vision loss and providing students access to the general curriculum, the Program of Studies, Core Content, and Expanded Core Curriculum for Students with Visual Impairments.

      Working with the regional consultants, KSB Outreach Early Childhood Coordinator provides consultations and assessments and other forms of technical assistance to districts and families for children between the ages of three to five. Training for early childhood service providers, PREVIEW Institute, is held annually on the campus of KSB.
  • Professional Training
    • Offers fieldwork opportunities and training opportunities for personnel work, with children birth-5 years of age.
