Brief Description

An affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the National Association to Promote the Use of Braille offers a variety of services to families with regard to braille and sponsors the Braille Readers are Leaders Contest.

Services Offered

Services for Adults

  • Community Outreach Programs
    • Provides speakers to schools and other organizations to inform and educate concerning use of braille.
  • Information and Referral
    • Provides information about use of braille and refers to appropriate community resources.

Services for Children

  • Braille and Reading Instruction
    • Promotes braille literacy among children and adults. Provides information about braille sources, sponsors events including children's braille reading contest (Braille Readers are Leaders). Monitors and discusses among its membership a variety of issues related to the Braille Code.
  • Education Services
    • Provides information about the importance of braille in the education of a blind or partially sighted child and information about what families can expect from school systems with regard to braille. Provides tips to families about helping children increase braille reading rates.
  • Information and Referral
    • Provides information about braille resources and libraries and information for families to help them determine if braille would be helpful to their child.
