Blind Diabetic cant use glucometer to test glucose
Posted by nonstop99 on 3/18/2012 at 10:16 AM
Hi,I am a visiting nurse, and need tips on helping a blind client use the glucometer independently. He is having difficulty placing the brop of blood from his finger on the lancet, because his finger tip sensation is not good. Plus, when he pricks his finger the blood get on everything. Any suggestions would be great. Too, bad there is not a meter that talks and takes blood in one step. Thanks

There is an excellent tool available from a company called Viadrop. It allows for lancing and guiding the test strip to the blood drop! Check it out at http://viadrop.weebly.com/

I have been a Diabetic since January 2011. I use that same meter myself. I just do my testing using my thumbs since I do a lot of Braille reading with my other fingers.

I am blind and have had diabetes since I was 3. I use the Prodigy meter. It beeps when the blood hits the strip. It works well. I usually stick my finger on the very tip and generally can tell about where I stuck myself. It takes practice but it can bedone.

I have a genetic eye condition which will eventually cause central vision loss. This same question is on my mind, too. There is an immediate danger of retinal detachment. My blood glucose is unstable. Why has no one addressed or invented a functional meter for us? Isn't it about time?
