My boyfriend is blind in one eye and losing vision in the other. He will likely be having a couple surgeries in the somewhat near future (glaucoma and cataract removal). With his eye condition, there's really no telling if either or both of these surgeries will be successful. Its possible that they'll work, which would be wonderful, but its also possible that he'll go blind, either during the surgeries if something goes wrong, or sometime after if they just don't work. We really don't know. With his birthday and Christmas both coming up, I'm looking for some gift ideas. I don't really want to get him something that is necessarily made for blind people (partly because he still has a hard time dealing with his eyes and I don't want my gifts to upset him, and partly because we don't know if he'll end up needing it), but I would like to find something that he will still be able to use fairly easily and enjoy if he does go blind. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. If this helps, he's really into computers and technology.
Also, as a side note, if anyone knows of any resources/support for family members of people losing vision in Los Angeles or Orange County (California) or just advice in general on what I can do to make this transition easier for him, I'd like to get in contact with you.

Hi. I'm also interested to know some suggestions here. Yearly, we've been giving gifts to teenagers and kids with special needs and I have this specific teener who is blind. I want to give him something special since he's doing a great job in school. Thanks for the iPod suggestion. I hope more would respond to this post before Christmas.

Okay, I'm not sure what happened to my response. I know that he has an iPod nano, but it's a couple of years old, so I'm not sure if it has the speech thing or not. And I can put down a couple hundred, although I wouldn't mind going a little cheaper than that.
Thanks for the response! I'll check out that site. :-)

I'm not rich exactly, but I can put a couple hundred towards it. He's got an iPod nano that's a couple years old, so I don't know if it will run on speech or not. But I'll check and definitely look into that if it doesn't already. Thanks!
Sorry for the double post, by the way. If there's a way to delete the extra I'll do it, but I don't see one...

Great question! I have a couple of ideas. First, what kind of price range are you thinking of?
The first thing that came to mind was the iPod nano. Everybody loves it, it's totally mainstream, and it runs totally with speech if you want it to. I use it for the gym and the commute. If he's techie, he'll love it. Of course, maybe it's too much money, or he already has one.
AccessWorld had a holiday gift issue in November. Don't forget to look at that
Still techie but a little less expensive? How about a thumbdrive or two or three. Very versatile, very handy, not so romantic...
OK, I'm still thinking. Give us a price range, that will help.
