How can you tell if your baby can see?
Posted by RBoardman on 7/30/2007 at 9:55 AM
My 2 month old daughter does not make any eye contact, does not look in your direction when you are feeding her, does not flinch when things are comming toward her face. I think she can see some light because she "looks" out the window. Other then not tracking things and not looking at you she is doing great She also does not like it when you are not holding or touching her. I asked her ped. Dr. and rather then saying I was a paranoidmom he said I see what you mean and is sending us to a ped. specialist. I am extreemly nervous and just want to know if anyone knows how you can tell Other then the Dr. which we go to on Wed) if and how much she can or can not see?

my baby Jaxon is 4 months old and still does not smile, his eyes flicker side to side,he doesnt look at me when i feed him he looks above me,sometimes he catches the light out the window, and i tried the light on in the dark trick which he did squint,he doesnt follow and if he does its like the odd half a second,im not sure if he is seeing or is he catching the odd shadow now and again, i took him to my doctors and he said his eye structures are all there, but is referring him to a specialist.Ive had other children and i know this isnt normal for a child of his age.

this all sounds so familiar. Go see a pediatric opthalmologist. Our son had a VEP (visual evoked potential) where they measure his vision by putting electrodes on his scalp over the vision center of the brain..your child will watch a monitor with patterns and shapes and the electrodes will pick up any impulses generated in the vision center... this will give you a basic visual acuity. i.e 20/over whatever.. After that, we had a ERG. This is done in the OR and most children are under anesthesia for this..unless under 3 months..this will check to see if the cones and rods in the eye are functioning. This is a good starting point. After all the testing was completed, our son was diagnosed with delayed visual impairment as they could not determine why he could not see..it has been 6 months later and with Early intervention for his eyes as well as Physical therapy for being low tone, he is doing great. email me at email@example.com if you have any questions.

Hi my name is Kathy my daughter Maddie (Madelyn) sounds very much like your babies she shows little interst in gaining eye contact at present she is 4 months old and she will now occassionally look at you for a couple of seconds. She is slow to fix or follow objects and some days she is better than others. One doctor told me they though she may have delayed vision maturation as her eyes appear to be normal. They also feel that she was basically totally blind until about 3 months of age. Has anyone else heard or experienced this?

I see you made this post in July 07, can you please tell me how your little girl is getting on now? We are in exactly the same position with our 9 week old. I picked it up from 6 weeks and have seen the specialist and it is such a wait and see thing, which is difficult. He is responding to light but will not make eye contact or follow objects. Something that we were told it could be is Delayed Visual Maturation, which is what we are hoping. Please let me how your little girl is doing and what it turned out to be. Thank you Sarah

I work as a childcare teacher in an infant room. Recently I noticed a baby born five weeks premature is not tracking or gazing at me. I don't know whether to be concerned or wait for maturity. Currently the baby is11 weeks old. I was wondering what you learned at your doctor visit.

Hi, I too have the same question. I have a Son born 5 weeks early, who is now 7 wks old (adjusted age of 2 wks) and he doesn't look at anything or track anything. He may look a me for a brief moment, but there doesn't seem to be any interest. My first Son was looking right at me from his birth at 37 wks. I'm scared he can't see!
He has an appt on Aug 24th with ped opth. Anyone have any good info? I'm sorry you all have the same problem.

Wow Rebecca, I was shocked to see your post. My name is also Rebecca and I just posted a message myself with almost the same problem with my 2 month old on the "eye conditions board". I haven't heard anything and my daughters apt. isn't until the 15th, but i'll let you know...good luck to you and your baby! God Bless - Rebecca
