Single visually impaired mom wishing to connect with other blind parents

I saw a few posts below about parents sort of in my position, but the posts seem to have gone dead. I'd really like to connect with other blind parents, especially those who are the primary caregiver. When I was pregnant I couldn't find hardly any solid advice, so I started a blog recently. I've been trying to compile information to help others who would like to be less dependent, along with tips, product reviews, so forth. Hope to hear from you.

Re: Single visually impaired mom wishing to connect with other blind parents

HI What I say may not be of interest as its about a UK based charity. However I can't help but think the challenges we face are pretty much the same wherever you live, the only difference is accessing services. Hope that makes sense!!!

There is a organisation called Disabled Parents Network who operate in England and Wales who have a Facebook page and online forum for parents irrespective of their impairment or condition.

The forum is at: http://www.disabledparentsnetwork.org.uk/cgi-bin/d... and you may find some families with similar experiences in England or Wales. Many families find it a useful resource for information and tips on finding equipment, problem solving and peer support. It provides the opportunity to ask questions, chat and connect with others in similar circumstances, reducing the sense of isolation many feel. We welcome disabled parents, parents-to -be, partners,Grandparents, family members, professionals and media, who can register. Subject to moderator approving registration they will then send a confirmation email and you shouldl then be able to post. I don't think there'd be a problem with joining. By posting there you can ask questions and get answers from others who have 'lived experience'.

We are also on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Disabled-Parents-Network/110710459009048 and so you might like to visit us there too.

They are also on Twitter at DPNUK

Just thought I'd mention it, even if it is in another country.

Re: Single visually impaired mom wishing to connect with other blind parents

Hi, I just found this site. I hope this thread isn't all played out. I'm a visually impaired mother of two very active toddlers. While I am significantly legally blind, I blithely assumed I could do anything but drive with no trouble and that parenting would be no harder for me than for anyone else. I have since found out that this is the stiffest challenge to my "I'm not really disabled" attitude yet, and I've done a lot of crazy things. I would definitely like to connect with others in similar situations to exchange ideas and strategies. Anyone interested in a Facebook group on this topic?

Re: Single visually impaired mom wishing to connect with other blind parents

I used to know a man in his 40's who grew up with 2 completely blind parents and we asked him what it was like. He said that he didn't know, because to him it was normal. He didn't know how things were "supposed" to be. So please remember this! He had many siblings by the way and a very happy childhood.
