VIEWERS, PLEASE TELL ME WHY YOU ARE HERE
Posted by gfmueden on 11/7/2010 at 4:37 PM
This is a personal appeal to every viewer. I mean VIEWERS, not posters; the posters tell me, but the viewers don't. If you don't tell me why you are here, how can I know your needs and what I should hold in mind? What is valuable and what is not?
Six months ago I asked if anyone had legibility problems and there has been not one response.
Do we have no low vision viewers? It is hard to believe. "hardsell" is the only person that comes to mind that has been consistently helpful to the low visioned. Who reads our stuff? I have no clue. We don't even have a count of viewers to give us a hint as to what may be of value. So please, tell us why you are here, why you are visiting this message board.

I am a totally blind 28 year old single mom with RP, COATS, Glaucoma and Nystagmus to name a few. I am from a small hole in the wall town in Washington that doesn't have hardly any blind people and the ones that are there are no where near my age. I am here because I want to connect with other blind and or low vision people with similar trials, tribulations, concerns, interests, goals, etc... It's nice to know that some one some where out there is going through the same thing I am. I have started a blog for this reason as well. So far I have no blind followers but have had one person who was deaf/blind comment which was nice. I want to make new friends and share experiences.

LilithD for the restricted field, Dr Cole added:
"One other electronic option is RSVP - rapid serial visual presentation. The words are flashed in sequence in the same place. Someone can eccentrically view and maintain a constant eye position and just read the words as they flash by." ===gm===

Dr Cole of the Jewish Guild for the Blind says that there are things that can be done, but he needs first to know the patient's acuity. He closed with: "If the parent can let me know where they live, I can try to recommend someone or a resource. For some searches, I would need a city and zip code. They can either respond to you, or me directly. My e-mail and phone number are below.
Roy Gordon Cole, OD, FAAO
Director of Vision Program Development
The Jewish Guild for the Blind
15 West 65th Street
New York, NY 10023
I think it would be most appropriate to respond direct to him.
The things that can be done include reading with the page vertical and training the eye.
Please keep us posted. ===gm===

For the daugther who has a restricted field and doesn't see the ends of the words, would LowBrowse work? Dr. Arditi, the developer, said "Very possibly, yes. I would think so. It's worth a try. However if they try it, tell them that LB works only up to Firefox 3.6.x." LowBrows is (was?) available from Lighthouse International, (lighthouse.org).
Please keep us informed. ===gm===

I am here for my daughter. Two and a half years ago, she had brain surgery for seizures in her occipital lobe on the left side and had to have it removed. She can no longer see out of the right side of either eye. Magnifiers don't help. She needs something that will take the words and move them to the left for that side of her vision to pick up the whole word. I am finding nothing, but I'm still hoping from East TN.

Al, I have copied your entry and sent it to AFB asking that it be sent to AccessWorld the AFB tech e-journal that reviews assistive tech stuff.
What you describe sounds much like "Voice on the Go' that I have just learned about. If yours is described on a website, please tell us where to look. email@example.com

I represent a company that offers a low cost product that works with BlueTooth compatible phones that turns text to talk, talk to text, email to talk and talk to email. It also allows access to FaceBook and Twitter using nothing more than a person's voice. I believe it would be a great product for the Blind but am unaware of who to talk with at AFB. We could offer a great deal for 'bulk' purchases. Do you have any info that would help us. Please respond. Yes, we are looking to sell something but we believe the AFB would find this extremely beneficial.
Thanks for reading, Al Mullins

I have macular degeneration, early onset, and I am very cynical about whether anyone, AFB or any organization, really offers anything technological for the blind. But I keep waiting and reading. And if it is offered, the support necessary to truly make low vision people able to be independent and keep their jobs simply doesn't happen.

"Prescribed": I think the nearest and best authority may be at the U of Houston, Col of Optometry. They have an Eye institute I think. I found it by Googling, not easy. I think an email to Dr Woo with a more complete explanation would be approriate. Here is his listing:
Stanley Woo, O.D., M.S.
Clinical Associate Professor
Director, Center for Sight Enhancement
ROOM #: 2122
I have extreme legal blindnessPosted by jforsythe on 2/16/2011 at 11:12 AM
I do read the posts, I am legally
blind, from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania.
I lost 96% of my optic nerves,
during a brain tumor operation.
I have many other disabilities
other than legal blindness.
I have to buy whatever I need
my own pocket because I can't
I'm on limited income,which
has been frozen by Social
Security, until 2014.
I could use a jot a dot,.and some other
low vision products, such as magnifiers but
I can't afford them in the agencies won't help
me because I won't work .. I
How Can I get to devices I need?
The Lions Club doesnt have enough resources.

Marcia Cohen, I have but one eye and the thing I miss is depth perception. The first time I tried pouring a drink, I missed the glass completely. Putting things down or in something else had to be done more carefully. The height of steps down is hidden and I tell that with my cane. My eye man told me to always wear glasses when outside to protect the remaining eye from blown material. ===gm===

"Prescribed", It looks to me as if a visit to a low vision clinic is indicated; they should be able to tell what assistive devices might help. It is a job for a specialist, and very uncertain as to results, but I think it would be wise to try. Where are you, please? ===gm===

I am trying to find a device for a patient, she see through a very small opening like O this and she can not set up her own meds or call prescriptions in. I tried providing magnifiers, but she said this did not work. Her husband is dying of cancer and I am trying to help her become independent with home health interventions. And to make her quality of life better. THIS IS WHY I AM HERE.

I woke up Christmas morning (2010) and could not see out of my right eye. Thinking that my eyes were full of sleepies or specks of something, I went about the day but found it to be very difficult - Went to all the proper doctors and was told I have a blockage in the retina, several specks of matter in the eye - nothing can be done!!! Learn to live with this. How scary this has been... I am trying to learn about this condition - what is out there to help me and talk to people about their experiences. I welcome replies...
Re:VIEWERS, PLEASE TELL ME WHY YOU ARE HEREPosted by gfmueden on 12/26/2010 at 6:49 AM
Thank you, Jeff. I get somewhat the same impression, but the responses are so sparse that I can't be sure. This audience doesn't say much, so it is hard to tell. It is hard to help without a full statement of the problem and the situation. The really nice thing about this board is that when there is a response you can be informed and not have to keep coming back to find out if there is one.

I use to teach and I too am blind/visually impaired and was just interested. I am surprised at the low number of responses and how most people are seeking for others. I wish there was more we could do. Think about a hot line aproach maybe. Seems like you care and are there. I just signed on so maybe see you around.

Re:VIEWERS, PLEASE TELL ME WHY YOU ARE HEREPosted by gfmueden on 12/4/2010 at 5:34 PM
Angie, I think you had better post a new request for help and describe the problem and where she is. (Some of the solutions are local.)
A lot of the posts are information and will be read by those interested, but don't call fo replies. So don't be put off by all the zeros. ===gm===
