Top 10 Things to Do in Brooklyn

AFB's own Mary Bellard, systems administrator and unofficial ambassador from Brooklyn, provides her top 10 list of places to visit in Brooklyn.

1) Grimaldi's Pizza (neighborhood: DUMBO), 1 Front Street Brooklyn, NY 11201

Directions: Walk from the hotel or take the 2,3 to Clark Street or the A,C to High Street or the F to York Street

Why? They make all of their deliciously crispy pizzas using a coal-fired oven. The line is usually long here, but it's worth the wait!

2) The Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain (neighborhood: Carroll Gardens), 513 Henry St, Brooklyn, NY 11231

Directions: Take the F,G to Bergen Street or Carroll Street

Why? It's a 1920s style ice cream parlor. Also: It's never too cold for ice cream.

4) Prospect Park (neighborhoods: Park Slope, Prospect Heights, and Flatbush)

Directions: Take the 2,3 to Grand Army Plaza or the F,G to 15th Street-Prospect Park or the B,Q to Prospect Park

Why? This public park was planned by the same designers who created Central Park in Manhattan. It's full of history related to the American Revolution. If you're interested, the Bowery Boys do a great podcast discussing the design and history of the park.

5) Brooklyn Botanic Gardens (neighborhood: Prospect Heights), 990 Washington Ave New York, NY 11238

Directions: Take the 2,3 to Eastern Parkway-Brooklyn Museum or B,Q to Prospect Park

Why? You can sit in the warm conservatory surrounded by tropical plants and pretend you're on a Caribbean island. Also: Walking tours and classes are available, even in February!

6) Talde (neighborhood: Park Slope), 369 7th Ave, New York, NY 11215

Directions: Take the F,G to 7th Avenue

Why? Features Asian-American cuisine by Chef Dale Talde of Bravo's "Top Chef." If you enjoy spicy food, the Korean fried chicken is amazing!

7) The Brooklyn Brewery (neighborhood: Williamsburg), 79 North 11th Street Brooklyn, NY 11211

Directions: Take East River Ferry from Brooklyn Bridge Park to N. 6th Street/N. Williamsburg

Why? This nationally recognized microbrewery offers great tours and tastings.

8) Brooklyn Bowl (neighborhood: Williamsburg), 61 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11249

Directions: Take East River Ferry from Brooklyn Bridge Park to N. 6th Street/N. Williamsburg

Why? Spectacular bowling, dining, and live music.

9) Barclays Center (neighborhood: Prospect Heights), 620 Atlantic Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Directions: Take 2,3,4,5,D,N,Q,R,B to Atlantic Avenue

Why? To cheer on the NBA's Brooklyn Nets basketball team (4 games in February).

10) Bark Hot Dogs (neighborhood: Park Slope), 474 Bergen St, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Directions: Take 2,3 to Bergen Street or 2,3,4,5,D,N,Q,R,B to Atlantic Avenue

Why? This small restaurant offers delicious artisanal hot dog and burger selections, but if you don't feel like schlepping to Park Slope, you can check out Shake Shack, conveniently located two doors down from the hotel.
