Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

AFB's ePublications Expands Access to Critical Resources on Vision Loss

New York, NY (November 2, 2005)—The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) announced the launch of ePublications—an innovative new initiative enabling users to purchase and access scholarly articles, books, and other resources published by AFB online. The material is available by chapter or article, or in the publication's entirety.

AFB is the leading publisher in the field of blindness and vision loss with offerings for students, professionals, researchers, and people with vision loss and their families.

"AFB is striving to broaden access to the wealth of resources we publish," said Carl R. Augusto, President and CEO, American Foundation for the Blind. "AFB's ePublications uses the innovation of the Internet to revolutionize scholarly publishing and provide our readers with a convenient, cost effective purchasing option. At the same time, it provides simultaneous access to publications for readers who are blind or have low vision."

By visiting AFB's ePublications store—at www.afb.org/epublications—people can search for their topic of interest using the site's advanced search capabilities. Once purchased, the material becomes available online to the buyer for one year and can be accessed at any time to read, print, or download.

Initial offerings include Foundations of Education, Volumes I and II—a renowned resource in the field of vision loss—and The Unseen Minority by Frances A. Koestler, the classic history of the professionalizing of the blindness field. Readers can purchase a chapter for $9.95 or an entire text for as little as $30. Detailed pricing information is available at www.afb.org/epublications.

Issues of AFB's Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB) are available dating back to 2000. Select JVIB "Classic" articles from before 2000—such as "In Support of Specialized Programs for Blind and Visually Impaired Children: The Impact of Vision Loss on Learning"—are also online. Full subscriptions to JVIB are $135 for individual subscriptions and $185 for institutional subscriptions. Single articles may be purchased for $5.95 each.

AFB is working to get other popular resources online in the near future.
