Dr. Kay Alicyn Ferrell Joins AFB as Associate Director for Policy Research

Washington, DC (June 2, 2006)—The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is pleased to welcome Dr. Kay Alicyn Ferrell as the Associate Director for Policy Research. A well-known leader in the field of blindness, Dr. Ferrell will join AFB's Public Policy team in June 2006.

"Kay's grasp of the relationship between sound research and sensible public policy will be a real asset for us," said Mark Richert, AFB's Director of Public Policy. "Her leadership in developing and managing our policy research agenda is going to have a profound impact on the scope and quality of programs, services, and rights AFB has always advocated."

"I am honored to continue to work with the outstanding faculty and doctoral students at UNC while pursuing a lifelong dream to impact policy through research," said Dr. Ferrell. "Working with AFB gives me the opportunity to do the job I've always wanted to do, with people I admire and respect."

"Kay brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise on vision loss that is certain to prove invaluable to our public policy work," said Carl R. Augusto, AFB president & CEO. "We are thrilled to be strengthening our partnership with UNCO and working with Kay again."

Dr. Ferrell currently serves as a professor in the Division of Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado (UNCO) and as the executive director of the UNCO's National Center on Low Incidence Disabilities. Previously, she worked in the Special Education Department of Columbia University's Teacher's College in a variety of roles. Dr. Ferrell's new role at AFB comes as part of a strengthened partnership with UNCO. She will continue her work in graduate studies at the University's special education department and remain based in Greeley, Colorado.

Dr. Ferrell has an M.A. from Teachers College at Columbia University and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.
