Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

No Limits Living

Americans are living longer than ever. That's good news, but as people get older, they're more likely to develop age-related eye diseases that can cause vision loss. Just as we do for people of all ages, AFB is addressing the need for resources and services that help older adults who are blind or visually impaired live with no limits.

We've already established key goals to serve America's aging population, including protecting state and federal funding to ensure access to quality vision rehabilitation services and devices for people who are blind or visually impaired. We're also working to ensure the availability and quality of professional services and improve collaboration to eliminate barriers, such as limited access to transportation and a lack of employment options.

And as always, we're advocating for meaningful legislation, such as the expansion of Medicare coverage to include low vision devices.

Through strong partnerships with a network of other organizations, AFB is actively meeting the needs of older adults with vision loss.

A Growing Population of Older Adults

By 2050, the number of individuals with visual impairments or blindness is projected to double, with the largest percentage (90%) being those ages 60 and over.

The Cost of Missed Opportunities

When people are unemployed or underemployed, the repercussions are stark.

People who are blind or visually impaired are

  • more likely to live in poverty: 18% of people with vision loss have family incomes below the federal poverty level; and
  • twice as likely as people without vision loss to be food insecure, which means they're not confident about their source of food for the next 30 days.
