American Foundation for the Blind is pleased to offer CareerConnect, a member of our family of websites, and the place to find employment information, career exploration tools, and job seeking guidance for mentors, professionals, and job seekers with vision loss.

Over the last six months, we've added helpful information for students transitioning to college or career school, job seekers interested in pursuing employment, employees who want to succeed in the workplace, and professionals serving individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Here are some highlights from AFB CareerConnect.

Transition to College: Program Activity Guide

Graduating high school and transitioning to a postsecondary institution to obtain a college degree or certificate at a career school is a pivotal event for any student. For students who are blind or visually impaired, it is an event that requires a coordinated effort from the student, their parents, teachers, counselors, and rehabilitation professionals to ensure specialized instruction is provided during the crucial part of the student's education.

The new Transition to College: Program Activity Guide is designed to help students who are blind or visually impaired prepare for obtaining a college degree or vocational training and, ultimately, employment as an adult.

The activities in this guide support the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) by providing information and counseling on enrollment opportunities in college or career school as well as instruction in self-advocacy to students who are blind. There are 24 free activities in this guide, and the materials can be viewed online, printed, e-mailed, or downloaded as an electronic braille file (BRF) in the Unified English Braille Code ready to be embossed. Careers for Blind and Visually Impaired Individuals

Have you ever wished you could find a list of jobs that people who are blind or visually impaired can do? This magic list would let you finally decide what you want to do with your career, right? Now, what about a list of employers who will hire people who have low or no vision? Wouldn’t that list be handy too? Fortunately, there’s not a special category of careers or a unique list of jobs or employers just for people with visual impairments to consider. Your options are wide open and completely up to you, your interests, your abilities, your aptitudes, and your academic achievement. Working-age teens and adults with vision loss can be employed in occupations across all industries of work. There are no limits!

Many legislative changes over the years have positively impacted the career possibilities for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Civil rights laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, protect individuals with disabilities from being discriminated against in all aspects of the employment process. Employers, especially in mid-sized and large businesses, routinely follow equal employment opportunity practices and have diversity and disability accommodation processes in place. More importantly, since the passage of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (amended in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014), individuals with vision loss have access to vocational rehabilitation training programs, services, and resources that can prepare them for employment opportunities as well as increase their success in the workplace.

Learning About Blindness

People who have never gone to school or worked with anyone who is blind often have questions they want to ask, but they aren’t comfortable enough with the topic to ask you. Perhaps, you are a job developer just introducing the idea of hiring a person with vision loss to an employer. You have been asked to give a presentation to managers and coworkers before a newly hired employee with low vision starts their new job. These resources can help you organize your thoughts, allay fears, and debunk myths.
