CareerConnect Social Networking Instructions

The CareerConnect social networking feature is intended to facilitate and support e-mentoring for the purposes of career education and development. To use the social networking features on CareerConnect, you first need to register.

CareerConnect social networking provides a way for users to connect with mentors with common fields of professional interest and experience.

Security and Privacy

  • Only share information that you are comfortable sharing.
  • Keep your communications within the CareerConnect system.
  • For minors, we recommend supervision by a trusted adult (teacher, parent, etc.) and selecting a user name that is not the minor's real name.
  • For minors, we recommend only using basic profile access when establishing connections in order to limit the amount of information available to connections.

Logging In

  • Log in to or access your CareerConnect account via the My Profile link on the CareerConnect homepage.

The My Profile Page

This page shows you what information you've entered into the Career Connect social network, as well as links to relevant Career Clusters.

Edit Profile

The information you provide in your profile helps the system suggest connections to mentors, and gives you access to relevant content from within your profile. Anytime you make changes or add information, remember to select "Submit" to save your new profile.

  • On the My Profile page, use the "Edit Profile" link to access the information you provided when you established your account.

User Information

The e-mail address you enter here will be used to send you notifications—double check that you've entered it correctly.

Contact Information

The information you enter here is optional, with the exception of selecting the level of contact you would like from CareerConnect (basic or full).

Profile Information

The more information you provide in this section, the more likely it is that you will be matched with mentors who align with your interests.

  • The information you enter in the "About me" field will be viewable by all of your connections.
  • Selecting the Career Clusters that relate to your professional goals will create relevant message board links on your profile page and will establish associations (via recommendations) with mentors who have experience in those fields.

Profile Photo

  • To add a profile photo, select "Add Profile Photo" from the My Profile page navigation.
  • On the next screen, you can select an image to upload from your computer by selecting the "Choose File" button.
  • Provide a brief description of the image.
  • Select "Submit" to save your photo to your profile.

Adding Jobs

Adding jobs to your profile will give mentors a sense of your background and experience. The information that you provide here will appear on your profile page under "My Jobs."

  • Select "Add a New Job" from the My Profile navigation.
  • Enter the information you'd like to share about the job.
  • Select "Submit."
  • Add as many positions as you'd like using these steps.

Adding Schools

Adding schools to your profile will give mentors a sense of your educational background and experience. The information that you provide here will appear on your profile page under "My Educational Experience."

  • Select "Add a New School" from the My Profile navigation.
  • Enter the information you'd like to share about the school.
  • Select "Submit."
  • Add as many schools as you'd like using these steps.

  • Enter the information you'd like to share about the product.
  • Select "Submit."
  • Add as many products as you'd like using these steps.

Creating Photo Albums

You can create photo albums to share with your connections on CareerConnect. For users, images showing you at work or using technology to perform job-related tasks can give mentors information about the types of skills you have. For mentors, providing these types of images can help job seekers understand what types of technology you use on the job.

  • Select "My Photo Albums" from the My Profile navigation.
  • Select the "Create a new photo album" link.
  • Give the album a name and description.
  • Choose an image to upload from your computer by selecting the "Choose File" button
  • Provide a brief description for the image
  • Indicate where you would like this photo to appear in the album order.
  • Select "Submit."
  • On the next page, you have the option to add to, edit, or delete the album.
  • Add as many photos as you'd like using these steps.

Status Updates

Your most recent status update appears on your My Profile page.

  • Select "My Status Updates" from the My Profile navigation.
  • Select the "Share News" link.
  • In the "What's going on in your life" field, write your status update—it can be about work, a new project, training, or whatever you feel might be appropriate
  • Use the link field to include a full URL if you want to include one.
  • Select "Submit."

Your Connections

Networking is an important part of job searching, career exploration, and professional development, so connections between users and mentors are the heart of CareerConnect.

  • Select "Make or Manage Connections" from the My Profile navigation.
  • On this page, you can see your connections, the status of connection requests you've received and sent, and recommended connections.
  • Connections are recommended for you based on your location and Career Clusters of interest, as indicated in your profile information.

Requesting Connections

  • To request a connection listed in the "Recommended Connections" section, open the user's profile page by clicking on his or her user name.
  • At the top of the selected user's profile page, you'll see links to send a connection request, send a private message, or hide this user from your list of recommended connections.
  • To send a request, select the "Send [user name] a connection request" link.
  • Enter a personal message if you like, and select the level of access you'd like the user to have to your profile.

Accepting Requests for Connections

  • To accept a request to connect, from the "Make or Manage Connections" page, scroll down to the " People Who Have Sent Me a Connection Request" header and find the request you'd like to accept.
  • Click on the user name to open his or her profile.
  • At the top of the profile page, select "Accept connection request with [user name]."
  • On the next page, indicate the level of profile access you'd like the connection to have.
  • The user will now appear under "My Connections" on the Make or Manage Connections page.

Setting and Changing Profile Access Levels

  • As noted above, you select the level of access a given connection has to your profile information whenever you make a connection.
  • Basic access: permits access to your user name, vision status, and member ID.
  • Full access: permits the connection to see your user name, full name, vision status, member ID, photo albums, and status updates.
  • To change the access level of a connection, select their user name under "My Connections" on the Make and Manage Connections page.
  • Find the "Change [user name's] access level to my profile.
  • Select the access level you'd like.
  • Select "Submit."

Searching for Mentors

You can search for mentors by key word or advanced search.

  • To search for a mentor by key word, select "Make or Manage Connections" from the My Profile navigation.
  • Select "Mentor Search" from the navigation on the Connections page.
  • Type your key words into the Key Word field, select your country, and select "Submit."
  • The next page will show your search results. From here, you can select the user name of the mentor you'd like to contact and send him or her a question via private message or make a connection request.
  • If your key word search was not successful, or if you'd like to limit your search to decrease the number of results you receive, try the Advanced Mentor Search.
  • Fill in as many fields as you like—remember that the more requirements you provide for the search, the fewer results you'll receive.

Private Messages

Private messages are only seen by the sender and recipient and are a good way to communicate with mentors and connections about individual concerns that you don’t want to discuss on a more public forum like the message boards.

  • To send a private message, select "Make or Manage Connections" from the My Profile navigation.
  • Select the user name of the connection you'd like to send a private message to.
  • At the top of the recipient's profile page, you'll see links to send a connection request, send a private message, or hide this user from your list of recommended connections.
  • To send a private message, select the "Send private message to [user name]" link.
  • Enter a subject and message.
  • Select "Submit."

Connecting through the Career Clusters Message Boards

You can ask and answer questions, see ongoing discussions, and get more information in one place from a number of people through the Career Clusters Message Boards.

  • If you provided your Career Clusters of interest in your profile information, you'll find related message boards listed on your My Profile page under the "My Career Clusters" header.
  • Click the link of the message board you'd like to post to.
  • Beneath the "Add a Subject" header you'll find fields for the title and the comment/question you'd like to post to the board.
  • Next, type the security word in the field provided, and hit "Submit."
  • It may take some time for your post to appear on the board.
  • If you'd like to answer an existing question or take part in an ongoing discussion, from the message board home page, click the title of the subject you'd like to participate in and fill in the fields below the "Post a Reply" header.
