Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

Independent Living Specialists

Independent living specialists can most often be found working in Independent Living Centers (ILCs). Their focus is empowerment of persons with disabilities. Professionals and consumers of rehabilitation services work to enhance the quality of life and promote the rights of citizens with disabilities. Independent living specialists help consumers negotiate with Social Security about benefits, secure accessible housing, employment, transportation, community inclusion, recreation, and health and social services.

Independent living professionals are supported by the National Association of Independent Living (NAIL). This division of the National Rehabilitation Association advocates for the power of informed choice. The division believes that "education, awareness, and advocacy will eliminate the barriers to equal participation for persons with disabilities."
