State Adoption of Textbooks
The process through which textbooks are selected for classroom use varies throughout the United States. In 20 states, textbooks are adopted for all school districts by the state department of education or board of education. In these states, known as state adoption states, the textbooks chosen are the same for all school districts. In the other 30 states, called open territory states, textbooks are adopted at the local school district level or at the individual school level.
The following are the state adoption states. All adopt textbooks for kindergarten through 12th grade unless otherwise noted.
- California--adopts only K-8
- Indiana--adopts only 1-12
- New Mexico
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
Adoption periods and subject schedules vary by state and may be specified by subjects and/or grades for each year.
