Employment Patterns of Older Workers with Visual Impairments

Abstract: In the United States, the demand for additional workers is projected to grow by 1.3% per year through 2006, resulting in tight labor markets in the long term (Twenty-fifth Institute on Rehabilitation Issues, 1999). The supply of workers is expected to decrease as people retire and fewer young people are available to take their place. One solution to this shortage is the continued participation of older workers in the workforce. While this is beginning to occur, older persons with disabilities have fewer opportunities for employment, although their need for employment is just as great (Commonwealth Fund, 1993; Florida Council on Aging, 1997).
