Volume 100Special Supplement

Box 2.

Family structure and poverty

A single teenage mother of a 11/2-year-old boy with multiple disabilities, including a seizure disorder and visual impairment, lives in a single room in a large city. In addition to working with the child, the service providers spend a portion of their visits working with the mother to schedule medical appointments and the necessary transportation, which is often unreliable. The vision teacher sometimes accompanies the young mother to her visit with the ophthalmologist. The vision teacher also writes a grant to obtain a bath seat as well as a switch-activated toy for the child.
