The Relationship Between Visual Impairment and Gestures


Abstract: This study found that the gestural activity of persons who are visually impaired differs from that of persons who are sighted. Specifically, the subjects who were visually impaired used more adaptors (especially finger-to-hand gestures) and fewer conversational gestures than did those who were sighted. Differences in gestural activity by degree of visual impairment and grade in school were also observed.
