The Effectiveness of External Bus Speaker Systems for Persons Who Are Visually Impaired


Abstract: The Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines provide a regulatory framework for internal stop announcements on fixed-route buses, but do not provide standards on external-speaker announcements to identify incoming buses. This study examined the effectiveness of external-speaker announcements, including the placement of external speakers, the ability to understand simultaneous bus announcements, and the speech enhancement of announcements.
