  Hi,
  There is a new PDA out from Freedom Scientific called the Pac-mate. this PDA is a Pocket Personal Computer, that utalizes Jaws as it's screen reader, and you have the option of getting a Pac-mate with a Braille Keyboard, Qwerty Keyboard, and either a 20-cell Refreshable Braille Display, or a 40-cell Refreshable Braille Display with both models. the Qwerty model, the QX, and the braille model is the BX.   What is so frustrating is to be locked out of what is an essential tool. Virtually everyone with whom I work has a Blackberry. A Blackberry is a cell phone and a PDA combined. E-mail messages are "pushed" out automatically such that the Blackberry gets messages as soon as does your desktop in the office.
  Freedom Scientific makes what it calls a PDA, but it lacks cell phone functionality. Plus, it is so big that you might as well carry a laptop.
  Alva makes the ideal device, but it is loaded down with all sorts of Braille, driving up the price to approximate a small car, $4,000 -- NUTS!
  Visuaide, of Canada, comes the closest to offering something sensible. The Maestro converts an HP I-PAC into a talking PDA and GPS orientation device. It, however, lacks PDA functionality.
  Pulse Data makes the Braille Note PK, which, like the Alva, is junked up with required Braille and an outrageous price.
  The TALKS software for cell phones is pretty slick, and would just about do everything, except no browser is available, and it operates only on some odd, non-MS operating system. Thus, it is useless for work, but is a good effort for the unemployed.
  As you can see, I've been researching this, but the ideal device just does not exist!

  Some possible solutions:
  1. To receive realtime email without polling, the easiest thing would be to get an accessible cell phone like the Nokia 6620 with Mobile Speak and just have whomever send an email to your phone via sms. For instance, I’m an ATT customer and if someone wanted to send me an SMS (text messaging is instantaneous) message they can do this via e-mail by using the address, 9195230205@mobile.att.net. Cingular has a similar gateway xxxxxxxxxx@mobile.mycingular.net and I’m sure T-Mobile does as well. Again it’s sent out as an email via Outlook etc. but it goes to the phone as a text message which occurs instantaneous. Replying would be as a text message unfortunately or as a separate email.
  2. Cingular and Verizon offer push type email for devices besides the Blackberry. Verizon has a push type email set up for certain phones, http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/businessSolutions/mobileProfessional/emailOrganizer.jsp?action=mpEmail. One of the phones listed the i600 is a Smartphone that the new Mobile Speak Pocket will work with, http://www.codefactory.es/mobile_speak_pocket/mspeak_pocket.htm. Cingular has the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone that can be used with their Xpress email service, http://www.cingular.com/business/xpress_mail_ne_more. Right now I don’t have a release date for the software from Code Factory. I didn’t find anything on the T-Mobile or Sprint sites that offer push type email service other than with a Blackberry.
  3. I found this company, Smartner http://www.smartner.com/ which has a product called Smartner Duality which should work with the current accessible Nokia phones that work with Mobile Speak or TALKS. I tried their demonstration version and I couldn’t get it to work on my Nokia 6620 although it’s supposed to. I haven't worked out the problem yet with their tech support. This is relatively cheap at $50. It works on the same principle as the Verizon redirect email, you load software onto the phone and your computer. As the computer receives emails, it transmits them out to the phone, probably through SMS but in real time without polling. The blackberry push email is server based BES so it’s a little different concept. Cingular Xpress email is more in line with the Blackberry BES and isn’t software based. Versizon has a server based solution as well, Intellisync maybe. They did this to have a solution for the Treo from Palmone. There is no software that makes the blackberry accessible for the visually impaired at this time and I don’t know of any efforts in this regard.

  Are there software programs for laptops which, with a GPS unit, make the information accessible? If so, what are they and what would the software plus the unit cost? This question assumes that a person already has the laptop.
