Eye Patch

After recently losing most of the sight in one of my eyes to cancer, I have found it difficult to find an eye patch that fits well and completely blocks out incoming light. Is there anyone who can help me?? Thanks in advance!!

I don't know much about eye patches but have you considered having one made? It seems to me that it would be a simple thing for someone who is good with sewing to put one together that could be custom fitted.

I lost an eye in an accident. I have bought patches from the following web site and have been very happy with the customer service as well as the product itself:

Their products come in various colors. The patch itself is a hard shell that allows eyelid movement and is covered with soft glove-type leather. The only small problem I had was this: The strap that goes around the head is mostly leather, but the connection in back of the head is a piece of elastic on each end with metal hook-and-eye fasteners (think bra strap fasteners). I shave my head and the metal fasteners rubbed the bare skin. I went to a hobby shop and bought a length of soft leather strap of the right width, took it to a shoe shop to be sewn on in place of the elastic, then bought an around-the-head eyeglasses holder and took the push-button adjuster off the eyeglasses strap and threaded the new leather straps through it to give it an adjustable connection at the back of the head.

Medichest.com has a number of different eye patches. I came up with another solution for my mom, who has been diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and suffers episodes of double vision. I looked in vain for the eye patches I remember from my childhood which attached to glasses by a suction cup. I went to the dollar store, bought 12 clear 1 3/4" suction cups for $1.00, spent another dollar on flesh colored nail polish. I cut the hook and the nipple where the hook attached from the suction cup, painted the cup, and stuck it on Mom's glasses. It works great, and we are thinking of having an artistic friend paint a winking eye on it.

I have good experience in eye patches. I lost vision of my left eye seven years ago in an accident. And lost of vision was not all, eye is still there, but so ugly that I never wanted to show it. I wear eyepatch over it all the time. I tried colored contact (it doesn't fit at all) and "ocular shell" (it fits but is very uncomfortable), but eyepatch is still my preference. It is true that finding good-looking and comfortable eyepatch is not easy. Those you can find in drugstores are not comfortable and usually too big to fit female face. I tried patch from www.eyepatch.com, it looks great but is not comfortable at all. I tried also www.eyepatches.com, they are very comfortable, but doesn't look good (at least it is my opinion). Finally, I found good-looking and comfortable eyepatches made by "Garco". They were made in different sizes, different colors, and look nice. There were two types, with elastic tape and fabric tape. The last one was much more comfortable. Unfortunately, that company is out of business now! Fortunately, I have good collection of their patches, so I still use them. I lost my left eye to cancer in 1997. I have found that the best patches usually come from the costume stores. I pay 99cents, and the patches have a silky appearance. I also have a close friend that makes special patches for me, by using material that matches some of my clothing. I especially have her make these patches for special events, such as holiday parties, weddings, etc.. This eye patch is such a conversation piece, most men find it interesting and attractive. However some people can be quite rude, with comments such as oh, you've been fighting, or I hate to see the other person. I keep my head up, because I am a beautiful young lady in appearance, and in spirit!

I recently had an accident, 4 weeks ago, and lost vision in my left eye. My loss may not be permanent, but I'm having a very hard time coping with daylight presently. My eye is currently inflamed, and a little swollen. I lost my lens and iris, so even with dark glasses and keeping my injured eye shut, I'm having a problem with light. So far, I've found the $2.99 drug store eye patches work best for me. They're raised, and don't rest on my eyeball at all. The problem I'm having, is that it's so d***** hot now, that my perspiration is soaking the patch, and it collapses after one day's use. The drug store I went to didn't have a large stock, and I don't know how many more patches I'm going to have to buy until my vision is restored. And even after it is, if it is, will I still have a problem with light? Does anyone know of an inexpensive, comfortable eyepatch, that I can use, if only for the next couple of weeks? I appreciate any and all responses.

Eye patches can be a real pain in the A**. I have had intermittant double vision for 10+ years. So, I always have a patch on me just in case I have double vision. I have plenty of experience with eye patches. Its best to make a patch so that it meets all of your needs. If your not the "crafty" type most drug stores sell eye patches. Eyepatches.com is a good place to purchace a patch too. In my opinion it is best to try several patches. And, when you findone you like buy several (5+). The reason is that some eye patch companies go out of business or change style leaving you outof luck. If your out there and you need a patch....don't feel bad...or out of place...or embarassed. Your not the only one. There are lots of us out there. Turn lemons into lemonaid. Kids are attracted to pathces. Use this as an "IN" to make friends with the little ones, who will in turn lead you to make friends with their parents. Your patch will take you places that you will have never had the chance to go with out the patch. Bottom line have fun.....You only live once and like it or not your patch bound.>>>>>>>JEFFREY

I don't know if I can help. I have started making eye patches for my son who is 5, for Lazy eye. The patch blocks out most of the light except at the top. It has a lining on the back of it so it doesn't rub on the eye lash. I haven't made them for adults, but it's possible something I could work on if there is a need. I make the patch to slip ober the glasses. I usually put a stamp on the front for kids, but I might be able to do something more mature. I have several differentg colored patches, none of them black. I have found that I become invisible when I wear a black patch. My purple one, however, causes folks to walk right up to me. I too would like to find smaller eyepatches. One size fits all is a bunch of bunk. I wear a monacle instead of glasses so I don't have a problem with the fit of glasses.

I have to agree with Katherina about Garco eyepatches being the best. There is however a company not mentioned so far that offers great looking eyepatches similar to Garco's. The companys name is sight connection at sightconnection.com under eyewear. You have a choice of the regular black patch or colored patches. They look great, feel great, and keeps the light out. These eyepatches are the closest I could find to the ones sold from Garco.

Thank you for the information on eye patches the sightconnection.com was very helpful for me. My sweetie has a rare form of glocoma which has gradually stolen his eyesight in his left eye and a part of the vision in his righ eye as well. His sight is only one of the casualties if this disease he is a fine man yet i know his self esteeem is also being chipped at. I love every part of him including his eyes yet i can tell he feels it robs his manhood in some way. I have begun designing some patches for him but this web sight is a comfortable stylish fix until i create something else. y relationship with him has given me a new insight into the world of the visually impared. THE EYES DEFFINATELY DONT MAKE THE MAN

I'm a male, living in Dublin Ireland & like you, lost my left eye 7yrs ago in an accident. Usual story - can't fit a prosthesis even if I wanted one. I've had leather patches hand made by leathercraft guys based on std designs. The best so far is my current range of calf-skin patches with thin kangaroo thonging threaded through them about 15mm from top of patch. Heat, particularly sweating, is my biggest problem. I dry them out over a lamp light overnight but eventually they absorb too much sweat, get smelly & go out of shape = new patch, etc.

Anyway, your email back in July mentioned that you'd tried a patch from www.eyepatch.com & that it was comfortable but didn't looked good. Please can you elaborate? Do they not look so good for a girl but maybe look OK on guys kinda thing? Have you since found any other decent suppliers?

I'm willing to try them as the other few sites I've looked at don't come across all that good. i.e: eyepatches.com, sightconnection.com, glamourpatches.com & prosperitypatches.com (which still doesn't exist).

Look forward to your advice?

Like everyone else who has responded, I recently lost my left eye (including everything in the orbit) to cancer. I also was frustrated at the lack of eyepatch options. At first I settled for Walgreen's basic patch(made by Apothecary Products called EZY Care Convex Eye Protector, mainly because it was cheap (<$3.00) so I bought several and every 2 wks I would trash one and use another.

But they were actually quite large for my face and head (I have a fairly small head for an adult male). So I went to their website (apothecaryproducts.com) and they have a smaller version of the same product for children. I bought off the web (but $25 min) and got 7-8. These are small enough that they don't dominate your whole face and head, yet do cover the eye and in my case the entire orbit. They do only come in black.

So for females or small-headed males---this is an option. The best thing about these patches is that they are cheap enough that you can trash them after a few weeks (when they get sweaty or smelly) as I work out every day and this was an issue for me.

Yeah, I'm a left eye guy myself, used to be a company called Snugfit out of California, but they went out of business. The best patch I have found is made by Flents Products Company, #502 Deluxe (I live in DC area and most pharmacies will special order them for you, they only cost about $2, and, I change them at least weekly... costs far less than smoking). It is a black patch with a cloth band that you tie. I have found that the only way to get the patch to feel right and not slip, is to tie it yourself (small bow under hair). This way, you can tighten it down for motorcycle rides, etc. or, looser for a restaurant. I hate elastic on my head. I usually buy about 4 dozen at a time.

I would like very much to find one made out of neoprene or something so that I could go swimming, something similar to a wetsuit. Lemme know if anyone has suggestions.

I have Graves disease which makes my left eye bulge out dramatically and I have double vision in it. So I have been wearing an eye patch for over a year now. I get mine through www.glamourpatches.com and they are GREAT ! ! I have about 10 in different styles and change them depending on what I am going to wear and what my mood is. I am usually an outgoing person and like to be in the spotlight, so when someone asks me about my eyepatch, I just can't stop talking about them ! ! Custom UltraSuede Eye Patches

I make UltraSuede cases for insulin pumps. One of my grandaughters has Juvenille Diabetes. One of my other grandaughters has severe strabismus amblyopia.

The L'enfante site is @ http://www.lenfante.com - go and take a look. We were having problems finding a patch for a 4 year old, but I see that the problem is more wide spread than that.

I can design a nice looking, comfortable patch with your help. I can't find a Garco patch picture, so please let me know what makes a comfortable patch.

I'll be making my 4 year old grandaughter a patch to go under her glasses, sized so she can't peek, and in enough colors so she'll feel special and pretty.

I'm imagining a padded patch with braided ties, fringe at the end of the ties - 100% UltraSuede, applique or not, there are plenty of colors. Let me hear from you! lenfante@lenfante.com ~ Susanne

I LOST MY RIGHT EYE WHEN I WAS 3 YEARS OLD IN A GOLFING ACCIDENT. I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PROSTHESES IN, BUT NOW I'M GOING THROUGH MANY SURGERIES FOR AN IMPLANT. I NOW HAVE TO WEAR A PATCH. Hi, I lost my eye left eye at the age of 7 to a BB gun. Ihave been wearing an eye patch for allmost 33 years now. I too had a hard time finding a good patch, the over the counter ones from the drug store are to big and bulky and the elastic strap would give me a head ache. when i was about 15 i took one of these store bought patches to a local leather shop as a sample, discussed size issues and let him do his work. I have since had many patches made at diferent leather shops around the country. they are great, the will last forever and I use leather boot strings for staps, so I tie a bow on the back of my head to the tightness i desire. Dont get the stings sewn to the patch, rather have them leave two holes to string thru, this way when the strings break all you have to do is get a new pair. The only down side I have found is that leather doesnt breathe well on very hot days. Ive been saying for years that i should have a linen patch made for summer, maybe one of these days. Thanks to all who have posted here. I'm currently suffering from double vision and the doctors are not sure what is causing it. The great big black eye patch from the drugstore is horrible. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. Why isn't there a neutral or cream colored patch out there? :)

I posted back in August of last year about my "temporary" need for an eye patch, and since then, it appears that my "temporary" condition is somewhat of a permanent thing. But, life goes on, and in the meantime, after trying a few different commercially available patches, I decided to try my hand at making my own.

Woops! Hit the wrong button... Any how, by copying the basic shape of a patch I saw somewhere on the internet, I was able to come up with a simple fabric and elastic design, that I can make in about a half an hour, hand stitching. Of course, once I was able to make basic black, why not something a little more colorful. so far, I have patches for Halloween, Christmas, Valentines day (one of my favorites, with the lace and everything) St Patrick's Day, and Easter. I also made a floral design for spring, and a leopard skin pattern one, that the ladies keep telling me matches their thongs! (I think my patch might be bigger though..) As far as perspiring, and that God awful smell they get, they're hand washable in either woolite, or just plain dish detergent. The point is, why spend $20 or more, on a fancy patch, when you can make one by yourself, for about 50 cents in materials. And yes, you CAN thread a needle with one eye. It takes a little persistance, but I do it all the time.

I lost my eye 45 years ago and have worn black eyepatches ever since. Twenty or 30 years back I discovered a small,black, cloth-tied patch available from Flent's in Conn. It's very comfortable and holds up well. Have been buying a dozen or 2 every year.
Flent's-now in Michigan-no longer handles them and told me the Chinese manufacturer had gone out of business. That left me buying large,uncomfortable elastic tied patches which I hate.
Recently, my pharmacist discovered a source of the good patches. You can email them at info@communitydrug.com (attn: Susan). The price is slightly higher than I used to pay; but I'm just glad to have found a supply.
If anyone knows of a source of white, comfortable patches, please let me know.

Hello, I am a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant. I have seen similar concerns and problems for years with having limited options for a comfortable and effective eye patch. So, I designed an eye patch that fits over glasses, any size frame and I can make a patch in any color. I have had many patients who bought glasses even when a presciption was not required so they would have a non-stick, non-elastic comfortable eye patch. When I was 10 years old I was playing tennis against a garage door by myself. I took my eyes off the ball for a split second and the ball tapped my left eye, detaching my retina. As a result of an unsuccessful reattachment surgery I was left with a blind, shrunken and unattractive looking left eye. I eventually had a prosthetic made that I wore over the eye. After many years of wearing the prosthetic, the eye became worn down and unable to take the consistent wear of a prosthetic. There were many long periods that I resorted to an eye patch. I am now 35 years old and recently had the eye removed and replaced with a ocular implant. I am in the process of healing from the surgery and soon will be fitted with a new and comfortable prosthetic. Over the past 10 years I have worn a black eye patch off and on. I put up with all the elastic band varieties over that time. I recently found a great source for quality comfortable good looking eye patches: www.eyepatch.org They are made out of ultra-suade and machine washable. Available in different colors. The strap is adjustable with a velcro closure. They are so comfortable and good looking that I just bought a bunch, just in case I need to go patch-mode again in the future. Check out their website:

Hi Kim,

I had car accident little more that year ago. As a reeasult of it, I lost my left eye and was confined to the wheelchair. I also didn't like black eyepatch and after long searching found exellent spource of colored and "fashioned" eyepatches.

I want to tell you some news. The first one is that I bought collection of L'enfante eyepatches (www.lenfante.com)) and I can tell you that they are the best patches I ever tried. Very, very comfortable, closing light completly and attractive look. I can recommend the to everybody.

Having loss of left eye for 20 years now, and, being & avid water skier & house painter by trade, I resigned to making my own leather eye patches, as nothing on the market was up to the task, comfort, looks & durability have all been top priorities.
Nowadays, due to being a pensioner, I have plenty of time on my hands, if demand warrants, I can produce these for anyone interested.
As they are hand made one-offs, I will need more equipment to speed up the process, if again, demand warrants.

Thank you for the interest.... I have started to produce eye patches for the public.
I am in the process of producing some patches now but would be interested in making a couple of patches for you also. I would need measurement of your head just above your ears to where it will be comfortable, and would also need to know if it is your right or left eye. The leather is expensive so I would have to request a donation of 10 dollars to help. The only colors really that I have for a lady would be the white or blue, but if the responce is large enough I can order pretty much any color you would like, including pink, yellow, purple etc. But for men I have Black , Blue, Brown, Gray, Tan, White and a few other colors in stock. Please contact me if you are interested in one and I will try to help you. I have worn a patch my whole life and I have tried all of them, I truly believe that mine are the softest, attractive and the most comfortable. They snap in the back and also have a 2 inch piece of elastic in the back for comfort and fit. I can send a pic of one on me if anyone would like.

My 22-year-old son was in a serious motorcycle accident in November 2003 and damaged his right eye. It "looks" to the right, resulting in two points of focus and causing balance problems. He suffered so many severe skull fractures that the patches with elastic give him headaches. The stick-on patches work the best, but both sizes (junior & regular) have pictures of kids on the front and, you guessed it, are too small. Does anyone know where we can find these in adult sizes? Hi Jeff,

I designed my own patch after losing the in my right eye, too cancer as well. The patch is small and made from thin leather, strings sewn to the patch, this patch completely blocks incoming light.

I can send you the drawing by email, should be no problem to have it made in a local leather store

Thank you for the interest.... I have just started to produce eye patches for the public. I am hoping to help other people that are in my position.
I am in the process of producing some patches now but would be interested in making a couple of patches for you also. I would need measurement of your head just above your ears to where it will be comfortable, and would also need to know if it is your right or left eye. The leather is expensive so I would have to request a donation of 10 dollars to help. For men I have Black, Blue, Brown, Gray, Tan, White and a few other colors in stock. Please contact me if you are interested in one and I will try to help you. I have worn a patch my whole life and I have tried all of them, I truly believe that mine are the most softest, attractive and the most comfortable. They snap in the back and also have a 2 inch piece of elastic in the back for comfort and fit. Thank you for the opportunity to help you.

Hello. I got hit in the face with a pool cue a few years ago, and it messed up my eye. At first it wasn't all too bad, just caused me a slight headache, but now it's to the point where whenever there's more than a very soft light in the room, all I can see is white from my right eye. So I guess I'm not blind per se, but the eye is useless, and continued exposure to light gives me horrible headaches and extreme dizziness, which has landed me in the hospital twice in the last few months. My question is where can I get a patch that's not so big? I see all the links here, but I guess I'm looking for a more "fashionable" patch, such as one that only covers the actual eyeball and not the entire socket. Kind of like what you see people in the movies wear, though I'm really not going for the pirate look. I'd appreciate any information, or if someone can make one for me, I'd be more than happy to pay. Thanks.

My son in December 2003 lost the sight in his right eyes. I've been looking for Child size eyepatches.That are acceptable with designs for children.Bryan is 8 years old.

There is a lady who sells really nice eye patches on ebay. I found her under health and beauty aids, but you should be able to do a keyword search for high quality eye patch. I wear a patch when my prosthesis gets uncomfortable during allergy season and found these to be the best. I actually get compliments - something I seldom did when wearing the large, ugly drugstore patches.

I was diagnosed with myasthenia gravis and began seeing double. I first went to an optometrist, he sent me to an ophthalmologist, and finally I was sent to a strabismus Doctor. They finally said I just needed to wear a patch. After wearing black patches for a over a year I started to design a patch that would was comfortable, would not fall off my eye or move around like the others did. I found unique medallions and had my wife custom make the patches to my specifications. Everywhere I went people wanted to know where I had found such unique patches. My wife began making patches for people locally with eye problems. I suggested she place some of her patches on the Internet so she decided to do that. She makes these one at a time with top quality material from plain to designer medallion patches. WARNING: I ordered an eye patche from L'enfante (http://lenfante.com/index.html), a company run by Susanne Demaree, last year. After many emails and pleading, I finally received my patch 3 months after I ordered it. After 1 year I decided to order 2 more. I told her I would only order them if they could be deivered in a timely manner to which she promised. The total cost was $58.00. The order was placed on 1-10-08. Well, here it is 4 months later and I still didn't receive them. She ignores my emails. I told her I was a senior citizen on a fixed income and could not afford to lose that much money. Again, she never responded. Her site is still up and she is still taking orders so I don't know what her excuse is nor do I care. So... buyer beware. DO NOT BUY FROM L'ENFANTE OR SUSANNE DEMAREE! I since have found a wonderful person to deal with. If you need an eye patch, I recommend Sara Harwin from EyeDentity (http://www.eyepatch.org). Hi there, my name is Shawn and I too lost my left eye to cancer. I have been looking for a suitable patch to wear. I have looked at most of the sites that have been mentioned in this forum but none have grabbed my attention. I am a 36 yr old guy and I am not a biker but I am a manly man and most of these patches are pretty girly or childish. I have found a mans patch site on eBay called jlgamble. He's fairly new to the patch scene but has worn patches for most of his life. He makes some great leather, snake skin, alligator etc. patches so if this is what you are looking for dont hesitate to check out his site. I have ordered the real snake skin patch and havent received it yet, when I do i will tell you guys how it fits and feels. Hope this helps some of you. Cheers

Well i'm not afraid to advertise for a company that I'm ecstatic to have found and that http://www.framehuggers.com . Had it not been for this eye patch i'd be as bald as my newborn. I was so tired of those rotten sticky patches I couldn't take it anymore. My doctor kept telling me to not use the cloth eye patches as they were all garbage. After I ripped my sons skin off his face I said enough is enough. I began to research eye patches online and I'm shocked at how many there are. The choices seemed endless. Pirate patches other sticky patches, leather, felt, foam, fleece.. Well.. after reading the fleece patch (Framehuggers) I became confident I found the right place. She at least has worked in the field and knows alot about what we were going through. In fact she in alot of ways explained more to me than my doctor did. (we actually talked on the phone for almost an hour). I think I was more excited to get the patch than my son was lol. When it arrived I was a little confused how it fit on the glasses but she has instructions as well as a link to the video on how to put it on.. Thank god for that! I just couldn't believe how she made this thing. And my son LOVES IT!!! He has his big brother as an applique on it and he wears it so proudly. He just staired at me like I slapped him along side the head as I undid the velcro and slid it off the glasses. He most deffinitely had not seen a Framehugger before. I then told him about Camille and her website and the tech there actually brought it up on the website and we must of sat there for 1/2 an hour lookin at it and discussing her patch. Sorry for rambling but as for the previous comment as to not want to advertise I guess woman are from venus and men are from mars.. I'm very proud to have found Framehuggers as they've been a life savor for my family. The doctor no longer recommends the sticky patches thats for sure. .We have a nice little teddy bear with matching outfit at the counter with Camilles business cards for all the other patients to get there own. Way to go Camille! Thanks for all you do!!

p.s. the patches are custom fit so make sure you measure correctly. You can get it to the millimeter so you don't get a tank on your face. all instructions on website .. it's a breeze! Good luck and I hope your patching woos are over

Let me suggest richmondproducts.com. They have a huge variety and some of the best choices I've seen. It doesn't matter if you wear glasses or not, they have something that works.

The price is by the dozen at a very reasonable cost. I usually put on a fresh one every 3 or 4 weeks, it is very affordable this way. I wear glasses some of the time with out a problem.
Snugfit has them sewn to order, I had the elastic band on the last batch extended a 1/4 inch with out a problem. A small company with a great product at a great price.
