  Susan,
  Parents are almost always the key to their child's school success; in the case of a child with one or more disabilities, the responsibility is greatly increased. Hopefully, you can bring this information with the documentation that exists on the increased success towards independence and productivity (tax-paying ability) of students that can read and write despite visual limitations. As professionals in the field, we know that there is also an increased quality of life for people who can get to the store to pick out their own favorite shampoo, but....

  Yes, even though we have legislation for children and individuals with disabilities in the United States for full participation and access into the community,schools,employment etc.. there are some whom do not recognize or understand the worth of people with disabilities as productive and valued contributers to society. Many parents and friends I know who are visually impaired are continuously raising public awareness wherever they go...to a restaurant, in the park, at school, at work...educating those around them of their abilities. Your idea of documentation of the increased success towards independence and productivity sounds like an undertaking of a logitudinal study. Any takers or is there a study that has already been done on this subject?

  I am an itinerant teacher of the visually impaired in Riverside, California. I enjoyed your article on IDEA in this months JVIB. I particularly liked your views on the "The world is watching" which reminded me of a parent of a visually impaired child who I met while vacationing in the Bahamas last month. Her son is visually impaired and she is frustrated her son's only option in the Bahamas is a residential institution. She was delighted that we met and wanted to join a parent support group. I have forwarded your email address to her. Perhaps you send her information on NAPVI. Thank you very much.
