I am an architecture student designing for the blind

I am a fourth year architecture student and would like to speak or write to someone who can give me information, ideas, suggesstions, as to how to design a home for the blind. I am having a hard time finding information about home design for the blind due to the lack of interest showned by most architects. If anyone knows what they would like their home to be like (specially a blind person) please contact me via e-mail. I am wanting to design a home where technology aids the blind in their orientation and movement throughout the house or space. Thank you

Re:I am leagally blind & have some experience.

I have experienced some of the problems a fully blind person might incure. Most, count steps on stairways(usually 13) hallways & distances to objects in the home & have them memorized. You have probably heard the expression "in my minds eye", you are able to draw & obtain a mental picture or map. I believe, the more concentict you make the layout the easier it would be to memorize. Walk aroud your place & count the steps you take & feel the walls for corners. When you think you have it in memory, put on a blind fold for a few days & you will find your own answers to your question.

I too am desining a space for a blind person, more specifically my client is Stevie Wonder. I'm only a first year and having trouble I have to have a place that has an area to sleep, store, prepare and cook food, and a place to entertain one guess. I need help understanding how these daily experiences take place. Any information would be great.

I am a Information Technology student at Kaplan University and I was researching some ideas for my course which is to develop a Project Management Program for a message board for our school. Then I came upon your site and was amazed because of your challenge. I don't know how I can help or find some help but I am going to try. I am presently disabled or challenged because of an illness but I just returned to improve my education at 58 years old. So I can understand some of what challenges that are facing you. Same as Kate, above, I'm a graduate student in Miami, FL trying to research for my disseration in 'graphic design for the blind'. I think our topics are tough due to the limitation there is for the blind. We ARE the research for the future. Just keep seeking out and you'll find it. I struggling too. Good luck.

I'm a physics professor. I co-teach a course, along with a biologist colleague, on the biology and physics of vision. I've become very much interested in the spatial cognition (visualization?). I am currently presented with the challenge of designing a home for a blind person. I am allowed to dream up the client and location for this project, but must stress the accomodation of a blind owner. I am having difficulty finding information in my university library, could you please help me find valuable resources on the lifestyle of a blind person?

On the right hand sidebar you will find some links – Tips for the Bathroom and Tips for the Bedroom I think will be especially useful.

I don't know if your imaginary client is totally blind, legally blind or vision impared, but many low vision people benefit greatly fron increased lighting and color contrast.

It's difficult to answer your question about lifestyle because we and our lifestyles are very different. But the articles I mentioned should be helpful in determining adaptations for your client and the project.

iam too designing for the blind and visually impaired...my subject is an entertainment center for them...which would have integrated living-learning-sharing environment for these people, where there would be training facilities, product displays, bookstores, display area exhibiting tactile paintings and sculpture, refreshment areas etc but iam finding it difficult to find information...if anyone can help...i would very much appreciate it....u can write to me at ushh_85@yahoo.co.in

I am a fourth year product design student, and just as almost everyone else here, I am working on a project to develop a navigational product for blind elementary school children that helps them learn/practice Braille...tall order, but any information that anyone has would be helpful. The most helpful solution to Design students is to become knowledgeable in Universal Design. It's premise is inclusive and its implementation aids everyone in the home, including people with visual problems.

this is pasha ,I am a fourth year architecture student at NED University,Karachi Pakistan.... and actually this is my thesis year so i want to do something or make sumthing for the blind.. like a home or sum thing else so in that case i want research from the people still working on this or else who worked on it...please share it with me i need it to move forward on that track plz give suggestion and assist me on that project about the design, information, research etc..
