I've been married to a blind man for 16 years

This is my third time trying to submit this. I hope I don't end up posting three times. My husband lost his vision when he was 17. Unfortunately he became a very angry person, was violent and drank and did a lot of drugs. That went on for about 5 years. I met him shortly after he got sober. Anyway, it's been a difficult relationship because we both have a lot of baggage from our families of origin. We have just begun counseling for the second time. My issue with his blindness is that I feel invisible to him. He comes home from work and is in his own world and I feel so lonely. I have a hard time with this. I read a lot of your posts and they seem pretty harsh where members discussed sighted people that had a problem with the blindness. My husband is more than just his eyes. But we just can't seem to be intimate. We have two daughters and he enjoys many hobbies. He works full-time, plays guitar and sings in a band, attends AA regularly and sponsors a lot of guys there. He's been paying the mortgate on the house by himself now since I stay home with my two year old. He is an inspiration to me. I think I need him more than he needs me. But anyway, I'm rambling. I wanted to know if anyone knew of a support group for the sighted partner. Thanks.

Look for support groups on AFB's Home page. You will find the AFB Directory of Services (which is now known as "Where Can I Find?" tool http://www.afb.org/services.asp, where you can locate organizations (in your area) that provide services to people who are blind
or visually impaired and their families.

Hello, My name is Leon and I was blinded july 28, 1978 in industry. Anger, disgust, rage, & bitterness all go hand in hand with the acquiantence with blindness. May I suggest just talk to him, read to him, and do not selectively delete those things you think he does not need to have read to him, or at least don't get caught doing it by having another say to him did you know.....? I am past most of the anger issues until the control issue raises it's ugly head. I detest feeling that I am in a mirrored fish bowl to be viewed and spied upon by anyone but I can't see them or who they are. If you wish to converse about this further my email address is firstname.lastname@example.org

Thankyou for sharing your situation. I am actually looking for some way to meet a blind man to date. I work for blind people and find them inspirational and more alive than I currently feel. Do you know how I can meet a nice blind man between 35 and 49?

This is a pretty old message and I don't know if you will see the response. I am also married to a blind man, and I feel your pain. No one seems to recognize the frustration and sacrifices that the sighted partner goes through.
I am interested in communicating with you.

I have never known any blind people but I would like to get to know someone, and am interested in dating a blind man age 24-29. I don't know where to go to 'meet' someone though, or at least become friends

Hi. Just talk to him. Meaning, you could talk about anything at all sighted people love to talk about. Go out to restaurants, cuddle him, give him massages when you're ready to go to bed. I am sure all this things will rekindle love again. also try and make love as often. Hope this helps.

I'm a little late in posting this response. I just signed up for membership. I am sorry for the difficulties some have faced where unresolved anger are in play. I'm not sure I can give any good advice here because I've never really been angry at being blind or being discriminated against by others. sure it happens but we can either take offence or try to educate others about blindness. I choose to try and educate. True enough, some people are just beyond learning. LOL. I signed up for membership here because the topic of discussion interested me. I am a 44 year old blind man interested in dating a sighted woman. I just moved to the Oklahoma City area and don't really know anyone. I have a couple of close friends here but I don't know anyone in the dating scene. I work for a company that buys and sells medical equipment. I formerly worked for a law firm but because of the conomy and the nature of the law firm's work, I had to seek other employment. Anyone out here from the OKC area?

Re: I've been married to a blind man for 16 yearsPosted by Southernbelle19 on 5/20/2013 at 5:48 PM
It's me again, the beautiful brunette who is looking to date blind men. Although I have compassion for the blind, I also recognize that blind men are no different than sighted men except that they have a keener sense of awareness, i.e. hearing, scents, etc. and I believe that blind men are more sensitive than sighted men. If you are a blind man and you would like to get to know me better then you may send me an e-mail at email@example.com. I will answer all replies. I am currently studying Legal Administration and am projected to graduate in January of 2014. Thank you!
