I think that many 17 year olds have feelings of whether or not people will like them, blind or not. Truth be known, we ALL have something about ourselves that we think at one time or another that people will find unloveable. This self doubt is just part of being human and is completely normal.
What I have learned is that the outside stuff really, truely, doesn't matter. The most beautiful, able body in the world can be empty and selfish on the inside. The most physically challenged can be the most beautiful and loving on the inside.
I think the goal for all of us, impaired or not, is to live up to our potential. Strive to learn the things you want to learn, achieve the goals you want to accomplish, find things you are interested in and are passionate about and as you spend your time doing these things you will eventually meet people that love those activities as much as you do - and they will get to know you, for who you really are , and if you are true to yourself and a thoughtful, kind person on the inside they will natually love and want to be around you.
It's ok to be lonely or have some doubt, but don't let that stop you from gettting up each day and going forward. Keep being the best you, you can be.

There are probably many people of all ages that feel like you do at this time. The first response to your question is a good one.
For information on making your life the best it can be, despite vision loss, look at the information on the AFB web site. Especially Living with vision loss .

I know exactly how you feel. My name is Annie and I'm totally blind in my left eye and partially sighted in my right. It was really hard at first and then I contacted the AFB and the NFB and got a cane and stuff. Now I talk to people from the local center for the blind if I'm going through something tough. My email is
If you want to talk, I'm here.

I'd like to offer my husband's email address. He was 16 when he was shot with a 12 gauge shot-gun and lost vision entirely. His life changed drastically. He was a juinor in high school, had just bought his own car, had a pretty girlfriend, and loved to surf. He's 40 something now (I forget :) and he's going surfing this Saturday. He plays guitar, has two beautiful daughters and he still loves to go to the beach. He felt like you did at your age. Trust me. Please email him if you'd like. I'll let him know that you might be writing. firstname.lastname@example.org

Believe me, I know what you're going through.
I am not blind, but I know what it is to be shunned. In our society, we have this "perfection" fetish: you MUST have the "perfect body" (if you're a woman, that means 20 pounds underweight!), the "perfect clothes" (blow a wad on the "latest fashions"), and the "perfect career path" (which you can't get unless you're born with MONEY and CONNECTIONS).
I was born into a huge working-class family (seventh of ten kids), wearing the cheapest clothes possible, and brown-bagging my lunch (if any). Socially, there was no hope of ever being accepted. So, yeah, I know that much of what you're thinking.

If you're still feeling this way, I can recommend doing something that has helped me in the past. When I was feeling depressed, afraid, and ashamed about losing my eyesight, I took the advice from a friend who told me that I should visit people in the hospital who were in a worse condition than I was. When I did this, it truly helped me to focus my attention off of myself and my problems. When you're mind is free from the preoccupation of problems of life, you're a lot more light headed and you can think of life in a much brighter way. Remember, too, that some problems in life are good to deal with because they can actually help you become a stronger person.
We all want to be liked by everyone, but in reality, that is impossible. Soon you'll understand that there are only a very few people in your life that are worth making an effort to by liked by. So hang in there.

Hey man, listen. I'm 16, and have been blind since birth. Don't get too frazzled. You will need to adapt no doubt but life will be the same. Lucky for me I still have a little amount of vision. I should use a cane but don't but my guess is taht you are a long way off from needing one. I read braille, but again, you are probably not to that point. Please don't think you're worthless. I can assure you that you are not. If you need any help at any time with anything, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Cody
Benefit of Yoga and PrayanamPosted by on 8/18/2009 at 8:36 AM
Hi I am Siddharth from India and I am blind by right eye and my left eye is O.K.My right eye is blind due to cataract and retina detactment then once I heard about Yoga and prayanam then I contact Baba Ramdev Patanjali Chikisalayay or Patanjali Yogpith,Haridwar then I started Ayurvedic medicine with their Yoga and Prayanam after 8 few months I felt and seen the positive change in my both eyes.My right eye becoming healthy with very slowly and my left eye spacticle lens power decrease from +2.50 to +0.25.So everyone who is suffered from eye problem must do Yoga and Prayanam and it centre is all over the world and for which who living in India can contact us at their local(city) Patanjali Chikishalaya or www.divyayoga.com

Been where you are... I'm 41 now...
I found someone that loved me and sorta turned the key for me, showing me I could be loved... and then I stopped feeling bad or sad about my self... A good friend once told me, "if you don't see anything in yourself, no one else will either"... I often think that being blind has been a great filter for making friends... some people don't want to waste their time with you, it's great to find that out front instead of a few months or years down the road. be a wonderful person and will attract that... In college one day, I realized, that for so long, I wanted to be "normal" and then I thought, "normal" is so boring, I've done so many other things that normal people don't do, I have great loving friends and family....
It's a mental exercise... that gets easier with time... I just got tired of being tired of feeling that way and said screw it... a wise man once said about worrying, "if you can change it, why worry. If you can't change it, why worry?"....
Find goals in your life and work towards them...
And know there are people that have done it...
