just found out my 6 month old is blind

I found out today that my baby girl is blind. We thought there was a chance because of the way she behaved. I have no answers and no education about the blind. I am so scared for her and her future, along with whats in store for me. If there is anyone who can help, please do.

I know this is desvestaing news for you.We have a 3 year old granddaughter who was born vision impaired. We cried a lot when we found out she about 8 months old.But as she grew she does so great that she made us feel better.Get in touch wit the commission for the blind in your state and early childhood intervention from your school district .They are very good with support and education. Our little one does everything a child with sight does. She climbs and runs and loves all kinds of books. keep in touch with this web site for help from from other parents who can support you .

My son is almost 3 and he is visualy Impaired. He has ONH and has also been blind since birth. I found out when he was 4 months old. I was so scared also and I also had no experance or knowledge. But the great thing is that we can educate ourselves and learn. I took a course from Hadley School for the Blind http://www.hadley-school.org/Web_Site/2_c_family_e... You can take these courses for free and you will learn so much. They have one just for parents of babies. They have some great web sites and if you need help finding them because you don't have much time or don't know where to start, or just need someone to talk to that has been there you are more than welcome to call me and I will help answer any questions that I can or help you look for info. if I don't have an answer from my own experance. My # 970-824-2067 or my e-mail is juanfingers@hotmail.com I am so sorry that you are going through this but it will get better.

I am the father of a child born blind. She is now seven years old, doing extremely well in first grade, reads and writes Braille at 35 words a minute, and is loved by her classmates, teachers and really anyone who comes in contact with her. You have a lot to look forward to. Here is what I suggest:

1. Find out all you can about what is causing her VI. Keep abreast of all the other medical issues that may be related to her VI.
2. Find other families raising a child with the same issues, and communicate with them. You already are doing that, as evidenced by your post.
3. Share your experience, strength and hope with them, as they share with you. You are not alone.
4. Stay positive, and hopeful. Blindness is an inconvenience only, and not an impediment to a full and successful life!

Just my two cents worth.

Take Care,

Rick Taylor, daughter Erin, age 7

Re:just found out my 6 month old is blind

I remember the day that the doctor said "Your daughter is blind and will never see." I was crushed, we didn't believe it. She is now 18 months old and is so amazing! Born 3 months early and weighing 2 lbs, she and her twin brother both started walking around their actual due date (15 months old). Actually, she stood unassisted well before then. She babbles, she moves fearlessly, nothing can stop her. I read everything that I can on the subject and I am learning Braille so that someday I can leave her little notes in her lunchbox.

Contact Early Childhood Intervention in your area. They will come and assess your child and put you in touch with many resources. Our daughter has vision therapy at our home every friday. The therapists offer support and answer all kinds of questions.

Hang in there and take care of yourself. Her strength depends on you!:)

Re:just found out my 6 month old is blind

I am a blind adult. I am finishing my BA this May. It was not an easy task, not because of my blindness, but because it is just dern tough out here in the world. Your daughter is bound to grow in to a great woman one day, and you will wonder what happened. You are my reason for wanting to work with children and their families in a hospital or clinical setting so that i could try to set fears a bit atease. No one can decide what will become of a six month old, and the blindness will just be an extra challenge. I won't fib and say everything is easy, my brothers and I had our share of squables and mean battles, but I am no worse for the rivalry. I have some knowledge of how these systems work, and would be happy to help anyone who would like my input. I have studied early child development as my concentration in my BA, so I understand the average developement of children and would love to learn more about all of yours.

My mother would like to give you a piece of advice. She says that worrying and grieving over your child's blindness will not solve anything. We know it hurts but just try to raise your child as you would raise a sighted child. If blindness is his or her only disability, place her in a mainstream school when she is old enough. (I say this because I went to a a regular school and I graduated high school with everyone else and had straight A's all the way. It is possible for your child.) For now, just nurture your child. Don't worry about the future just yet. You have already taken a step in the right direction by posting on this message board. God bless you and your child!

Re:just found out my 6 month old is blind

hi there. My son is 4.5 months old. I noticed some rapid eye movement and an inability to focus around 2 months. My pediatrician said not to worry, he was just learning how to focus. At 3 months, I called and she said it was normal...infants learn to focus between 3 to 6 months. I took him in yesterday for his 4 month check up and she noticed his eyes and immediately sent us to childrens hospital in boston. They did some tests but i left there with no answers. They want to do an ERG..to see what he can see. anyone familiar with this. they say his eyes may not be maturing as they should but they could in time.. anyone have that happen to them.
Any advice would be so helpful. thanks, Matt

Hi. I'd be glad to help so please email me with any questions at dchandler001@carolina.rr.com. I lost my sight from retinopathy of prematity and am now 54 years old. I have an 8-year-old daughter whom I am raising on my own because of divorce. Life is challenging but fun. Encourage and believe in your daughter and she will do well.

Re:just found out my 6 month old is blind

Dear proud mommy (and you should be proud of your beautiful child) Believe me I know exactly what you are going thru. I have a 5 year old little boy who is visually impaired and only has some sight in one eye. The other is blind. I have cried so many days and nights. I would get so angry at god, for letting this happen, so angry at my Doctor and very depressed. I had no one to talk to and my family just kept telling me "God only gives you what you can handle" To this day i don't discuss my son's progress or condition with them, for they don't understand. I know they want to be positive for me, but it doesn't help.
The only suggestions I can make is get to know your child and be close to them. know what makes her/him smile and build on that. Talk to her/him alot! Give them alot of different textures to explore and try and stay away from all of the hard plastic toys. Take her to the park and if a parent asks about her take pride in telling them about her/his strengths, smiles what she can do!
My teacher for the visually impaired gave me a book, that i wish i would have gotten when my son was first born. I will have to look up the title for you. The best piece of advice in the book was "stop thinking about the future for your child and what he can and cannot, will and will not be able to do. Focus on what your child CAN do and build and brag on that." Take your child to get her picture taken and show off the pictures, I brag about my son any chance that I get. It has helped him be more outgoing and has built his self-confidence. Knowing that he has his mom encouraging him to do something, he will try it. He is now the loudest, most friendly little boy in his pre-school class.
Please write to me, I would love to stay in contact with you, you might just help me out too, who knows.
It will be okay, it just will take time.
I swear at the school, when my little joey crosses the road with his cane, one of these days we are going to cause an accident, they way every one stops and stares. But I just wave to them and enjoy the free path.
Take care

Re:just found out my 6 month old is blind

When my little boy was first born I thought something was not right with his eyes. Our Doctor said he was fine and there was nothing they could do until he was 6 months old. At his 2 month check up I again said something was not right and we have family history of eye problems on the male side. He blew me off so I took it apon myself to call a eye Dr. with in 2 weeks we saw 3 different Drs and found out that he has an eye condition called FERV which his dad has. My sons eyes were very jumpy and he could not focus on anything. He now at 3.5 months old can only see peripheral. His dad can only see out of 1 eye. If there is one thing I have learned from this is if you think there is something wrong with your child and the Dr. doesn't listen check on it yourself. Stacy

Re:just found out my 6 month old is blind

I just found out that my 5 month old baby boy twin is blind too. Am crying a lot, holding him a lot and playing with him more, while my husband plays with my daughter the other twin. I don't know how to handle or cope with my blind child. He doesn't see me but hears me. I feel he doesn't deserve this. what to do, what to do.....just scared and sad.

Re:just found out my 6 month old is blind

I just found out my 4 month old has optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) and very low vision, if any. I notice he wasn't tracking toys nor making eye contact when breastfeeding. I'm just beside myself. It's hard for me to stay strong for him when I'm crying all the time. I feel like he's trying to see and getting frusterated that he can't. I'm also currently living in South Korea because my husband is in the army which makes everything just a little more challenging. Any advice, ideas for support would be so much appreciated.
