Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

Seeking a career in the IT field.

Hello, everyone.

I have had a congenital eye disorder called microphthalmia (simply meaning that my eyes are much smaller than the normal human eye) since birth; I have no sight in my left eye, and a very small amount in my right eye.

I have had a strong interest in computers since 2001. Since 2004, I have been a "techie" for many of my friends and family, as well as others who were referred to me. At the end of this year, I will have earned an A.S. degree in the major fo Computer Information Systems.

I have been seeking employment for over nine years (ever since I turned eighteen); I have had some interviews, but no hirings. One such incident was due to the fact that I could not "see to read a cash register".

I am just curious about this. Is there anyone here on these forums who works in the field fo Information Technology in some way, shape, or form? If so, what technologies do you use to assist you in your work? Also, have you obtained any certifications (A+, Network_, etc)?

I currently use a screen magnifier for computer access, but I am working on learning JAWs (for Windows) and Orca (for Linux) as I know that I can probably navigate a comptuer system much faster using a screen reader.

In any case, I am looking forward to getting to know everyone here, and I look forward to helping with technology related issues, if I can be of any help.

Take care.

I work online for the University of Phoenix ,teaching and I use Jaws. There are many online positions that you can do. I cannot remember the address but there is a cite that that finds jobs for people with disabilities. Do you have a degree in anything?

Hi R27784. Have you had any lucj finding an IT job yet? I've bene in the IT field for a long time. This year, I've been disgnosed with 2 separate eye conditions. I haven't been offically working in the IT field since 2010 (I do a little consulting every now and then) because of spinal issues. What area of IT would you like to go in? Is there an area where you are good in or have a strong interest in? You have to start from there first and then that will help you to know what kind of position to look for that suits you.

I'd be very interested to hear about how you found work at the University of Phoenix. I have a BSIT degree from there. I'd love to do something like that. I use Jaws, NVDA, System Access et. If you could supply some leads, or someone I could talk to that would be wonderful!
