I need help answering this message

Why do some families do this.
First mine are all sighted.
I am the only one in the family who is blind.
So they call my cane a liar.
And I use my cane the right way, it helps me a lot and I like using it too.
I don't like that at all when they say that, and I think they do know it.
Then when they see a joke about something about blindness.
They think it is funny and they tell me.
I do not think it is not funny at all because I live like that every day and I like being blind.
Then they say to me you should learn how to take jokes.
So have anyone have gone through something like that?
And are they taking disadvantage of the blind?

Hi, I would say that either your family is really uncomfortable with your blindness and don't know how to talk to you, or they are really insensitive. Have you talked to them about this? I have only recently lost my vision and not completely. When it became time for me to tell friends what was happening some of them thought I was (and am) faking. Obviously they are not and were not my friends. It is frustrating and hurtful to have people think that blindness is something I would fake. I hope you can talk to your family and tell them how you feel. Good luck!

Thank you on telling me.
I think one time I tried to tell them about it.
And they told me to grow up.
So I am scared to tell them it about blindness.
I guess I have to wait until I move out some day.
I can understand about how some people can not be nice about blindness.

Drill monster, I did not like it at all when you called my cane a liar.
Every One has their own personal ideas.
I feel happy, safe and I love my canes.
They are a nice tool for me.

I know my family had a tough time with me too i am the only visually impaired person in my family as well. Some of my family still has a hard time and it has been 12 years. Not everyone can handle or understand this. So they cope the best way they can. If you ever need to talk you can email me itsme0768@yahoo Amanda

I think, for me, personally, it depends on the kind of blind jokes they tell. Sometimes, my family jokes with me about it and I just laugh with them. But they don't make fun of it. There is a line there. As for the cane, that is a personal opinion. Some people prefer their cane, while others, myself included, don't exactly trust it especially when outdoors. Some people like them and never get guide dogs, and I respect that opinion. You have to tell them that for you, the cane is a good tool.
