Legally blind freshman in high school

HiI
I'm a freshman in high school and I am legally blind. I go to public school and I am worried about getting teased about my vision, and just surviving in general. Any suggestions or tips?

Hi my name is Sarah. I'm 17 and a lagally blind junior in high school. I hate school it is really hard to deal with. Kids tease me all of the time. If they tease you just ignore them and stay positive. Best op luck!

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Hi I'm Elizabeth. I just started middleschool, and I know what it's like to be made fun of. I think you have better things to do. Don't let those teens bring you down.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Thanks everyone, I'm Shelby, by the way. Nobody really teased me in middle school, except for once when I was in sixth grade. Otherwise, most people think that the tools I use are really neat, and everyone is just curious. I don't like to stand out, like using large print textbooks. I know it will help me, but I just don't want to. Thanks a lot!
Shelby

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

hi my name is tiffany. i am legally blind and am in college. i had problems with teasing a lot in elementary but by middle school it stopped. in high school i didnot have any problems with it. if it happens just try to ignore it and tell yourself those people just don't understand and it is our job to educate those who are willing to ask questions and become real friends. as far as sticking out people will know you are vi whether it is by seeing you if you use a cane or if you tell them or if they see you run in to something or not be able to see something. it is best to be open about it and accept that you are vi and use what ever tools you need to to be successful and your real friends should accept that too and will probably think it is really cool. good luck.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

yeah i agree with you how you doing in school Paulina

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Yeah, I had a lot of problems being made fun of in Elementary school.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Yea, I tell anybody who wants to know that i'm vi. I don't use a cane, and I don't look like it unless I'm reading or looking directly at you. All of my friends are great and are extremely supportive.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

hi shelby i'm mimi and i think you are off to a great start and as long as you keep your positive attitude you should be fine.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Hey Shelby,
What type of technology do you use instead of large print books? How do your teachers help you in school? I am always looking for new ideas to get by in Middle School.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

I'm glad you have suportive friends.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

I have a dome magnifier that is very helpful, and a minocular, which I don't use very often. As for teachers, my parents and I get together with all of my teachers, the school counselor, the principal, vice principals, nurse, and a leazon from the Blind School to explain to them exactly what I need, because I'm on a 504 plan, which means that teachers have to accomadate me. I also have a large computer moniter with special preferences, I.e. enlarged icons and toolbars. I hope that this will help you!

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

That's good advice.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Hi Jillian. How' did you get through school without a 504? I've had one since third grade.

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

Hello, my name is Elizabeth. I am in middleschool, and if you guys have a question, feel free to ask me.

O, okayRe:Legally blind freshman in high school

Hey, shelby whats up i was just wondering what is a 504 and how does it work Paulina

Re:Legally blind freshman in high school

A 504 is similar to an iep. An iep is an individual education plan. A 504 basically says that the teachers and the school have to accomodate you for your needs. For example, give you more time on an assignment if you can't see it. The 504 is through the state too, so if the school doesn't help you, you can go higher up.
